one of the most common presenting complaints as a result of referred nerve pain.
There are 3 main causes of siatica;
1. Bulging Disc in the lower back, this can put pressure on the sciatic nerve at the point where it originates as it leaves the spinal chord, causing pain down the leg.
2. Inflamed "Facet" Joint, this is the small joint that is on either side of each vertebrae and guides the movement of that segment in the spine. This local inflammation around the nerve as it passes past the facet joint can be a source of symptoms down the leg.
3. Muscle Spasm (Piriformis Syndrome) This is a deep muscle in the buttock region where the sciatic nerve passes through. The muscle spasm causes a pinching effect on the nerve, hence producing symptoms down the leg.
It's quite normal for a person to present with two or more of these causes (most commonly an inflamed joint and the muscle spasm) however it can occur to have all 3 causes simultaneously.
Chiropractic care is very effective at treating all of the causes of sciatica, not only to alleviate the symptoms but to provide complete resolution of the problem.
