Good to catch up with Ali in his home ground. Also did a session with him on my way up to Scotland. Top sets of 160kg*1@7 and 170kg*1@8.5 on bench, and 280kg*1@7 and 300kg@8 on deadlift. Not the most elite equipment, but foot to still hit good numbers at good RPE with slippy benches and no knurling. Encouraging stuff

How To Make Time For The Gym? -

We all have crazy schedules. Some of us are working full time, some are students and working, some working two or more jobs, others are balancing a family and work. I get it. Life is busy enough as it is. -

But you still want to maintain a healthy lifestyle and go to the gym? The decision itself highlights your determination. πŸ™Œ And I'm so happy that so many of you reached out to me for help. Here are my recommendations: -
✨Make an excel spreadsheet of your daily schedule. Slot in work, school, meal times and any other activities.
✨Decide how many times you can realistically go to the gym and if you can do it sustainably.
✨Slot in the gym in the empty spaces and mark it as 'Red' for priority. (I find colour coding activities helpful).
✨Try it out for a week or two and see if it works for you. -

Sometimes you may have to schedule the gym at unconventional/inconvenient times such as late at night, early hours of the morning, lunchtimes etc. If you are willing to make a commitment to your lifestyle, you'll find a way to make it work.

Got told off for rushing the deadlifts but it felt so fun, sorry @marsh.coaching πŸ™ˆ Week 1 of the plan - 4x8 @ 90kg followed by stiff legged deadlifts, single leg deadlifts, dumbbell hamstring curls and some overhead press (because I’m πŸ’© at pressing)

W2D3: Squats

I have more Deadlift footage coming later tonight, but since I have 8 sets to put on in this post, I thought I'd just dedicate it to squats. Overall, a bit of a tricky session, 115kg was bliss, but new gym new rack height and that messed with me. I had to put bumpers under my feet to unrack, blah blah, got the work done tho. If I was on a FLAT and usual surface, probably would've made these sets at least 1RPE easier.
Shoulder mobility on a side note is actually so much better, can't quite believe how the circuit has changed my life.

Touch-&-Go Bench Press 3x8 80Kg LS@6. Need to focus on bench pressing with my whole body rather than just my upper body. Practice "receiving" the bar with leg drive rather but sliding up rather than off.

Even though I didn’t get the double bodyweight bench that I was hoping for this was a 12.5kg pb as an U83.

That is where it becomes interesting, this was all on the back of 3 days coaching, did it make a difference to how I’d felt on the day? I don’t think so but it reminded me that I am for sure a coach not a lifter. The most enjoyable part of the whole championships was watching two lifters I coach achieve what they went out there to achieve.

Following on from part 2 where we discussed WHY you might want to use RPE, WHEN to begin implementing RPE and WHO should actually be using RPE, today we are going to be discussing HOW to begin implementing and using RPE. So let’s go. βž–βž–βž–βž–βž–βž–βž–βž–βž–βž–βž–βž–βž–βž–βž–βž–βž– HOW to begin implementing RPE...
In order to begin learning how to use RPE to guide training loads, I think it’s important to first simply begin recording your RPEs for the last set of each exercise or lift, without doing anything with it to begin with. Then, with feedback from your coach or after reviewing your training clips at a slightly later point yourself (perhaps the following day), you can then begin to gauge whether or not your RPE recording actually matches up with what is being seen in your videos, in terms of difficulty of the lift, bar speed, technique etc. βž–βž–βž–βž–βž–βž–βž–βž–βž–βž–βž–βž–βž–βž–βž–βž–βž– This is the important bit. This is where you really begin to break apart how things β€œfeel” from how many more reps you could actually do if it were needed - often two very different things. Generally speaking, things feel far harder/heavier than they look (which may or may not always mean that you could be working harder than you are). βž–βž–βž–βž–βž–βž–βž–βž–βž–βž–βž–βž–βž–βž–βž–βž–βž– Following this process, which could last several months, depending on how quickly you pick things up, you can then begin using RPE to adjust training loads based on performance on each day, while still using a % to provide a β€œguide training load” for each lift. Essentially, giving you a place to start from and then adjusting slightly based on the intended level of difficulty (RPE) for a given exercise/lift for that specific session.
