After getting a place in the elite field at Reading Half Marathon it's made me really think about things. It's sort of like the start of the next step in my journey towards my Olympic Marathon aspirations. It's like I've been promoted from the championship to premier league, and now I'm at the bottom of the premier league, needing to work my way up to the champions league places. If you don't know football you probably won't understand that analogy, but oh well 😂 So I've been thinking about what I need to do. I know I can run under 1:10 at Reading, but how can I give myself a shot at getting towards 1:07, 1:06 etc. And then even 2:20 at London Marathon 4 weeks later. I've spoke to a few people who are pretty knowledgeable about the sport, and I've decided on going 'back to basics'. I will be running 'naked' (without a watch, not clothes😉😂) and running based on feel. I will only wear a watch for my workouts so I can log my paces at the end of them. I've got a handwritten diary setup for the next 22 weeks leading up to London, and I will just be recording my training by mileage, how I felt, and my workout paces. The aim is to just build up my aerobic base HUGELY. I will run one speed workout a week of 10-12k of effort (e.g 10 x 1k with 1 minute jog recovery), and one tempo workout a week of 10-16 miles of effort (e.g 4 x 5k with 4 minutes jog recovery). Then the usual steady Sunday long run. As I get fitter the workout paces will increase, and I will do fast strides 2 or 3 times a week to work on my higher end speed, which is important to make 5:00 miles feel more comfortable. If it isn't comfortable then obviously I won't be able to hold it for 13.1 miles! So yeah, that's that really. Now I'm going to be up with the big boys I want to compete well, and I'm very determined to do so. I won't be racing again until Reading, so I've got a long 16 weeks to put in some work. Let's see what happens! 😬
