So far I’ve been spending my 420 binge watching artist Brice Dellsperger’s Body Double video series (and smoking). Fascinating stuff. Artists have fascinatingly diverse tastes of course, but generally most of the image makers I know are in one way or another invested in cinema. They watch a lot of movies. But Dellsperger uses his cinematic obsessions as material. This series finds the artist recreating scenes from various films. They were immediately relatable to me because he uses films by directors who happen to be among my favorites: Fassbinder, Hitchcock, David Lynch, Paul Verhoeven, Kubrick, and most frequently Brian DePalma. Let’s say, cinema with a certain kind of visual seduction. But the way he both copies and deconstructs these scenes and totally dismantles the artifices and tricks that make cinema worth watching is amazing to me. This still is from Body Double 31 which recreates a Sharon Stone classic from Verhoeven’s Basic Instinct, aka, the most excellently crafted misogynist smut thriller of the 1990s.
