mother! – Out Now *** CONTENT WARNING! NOT FOR SPOILER SENSITIVE EYES! 🙈 *** The fact that this film had got rave reviews from film critics and yet awful reception from audiences made me intrigued to see this. Are the critics out of touch? Is the mainstream audience just not film literate enough? Apparently this film is Marmite, you're either going to love it or hate it. So I'm surprised to find myself completely underwhelmed. The film had my curiosity at first; What's that in the walls? What's that yellow powder? Why have Ed Harris and Michelle Pfieffer suddenly taken over the house? Why is Javier Bardem so maddeningly cool about this? And why oh why is Jennifer Lawrence so goddamn submissive about EVERYTHING?! Then things go batshit insane and a baby boy is killed and eaten by a mob and then you realise that... oh it's all an allegory for the bible. How uninspired. The violence perpetrated against the baby and Lawrence is so vicious it just feels like shock for shocks sake. Also in Lawrence's case the violence comes across as disturbingly salacious, it genuinely makes me question Darren Aronfsky's intentions. All in all, I really came away from this film feeling a bit indifferent, once you realise what the story is actually about it all felt a bit pointless and old. This is nothing new or special. Mainly it just felt to me like a waste of a fantastic actress.
