Today, I had to remind myself at least 24 times to breathe. It was one of those days where every task felt too big to handle. I let my anxiety nearly get the best of me after working a 17 hour day yesterday. I was exhausted. I wanted to cry and laugh hysterically at the same time. So I did what any professional would do, closed the door to my office, laid on the floor for 15 minutes, and took the time to breathe. I felt the wave-like breath move throughout my body, getting caught in some parts and then telling myself to work through it until the muscles in my body relaxed. It’s a crazy thing when we remember to breathe. We take it—this pranayama—for granted some days. But there in my office, with my hands on heart and belly, I thanked it. I slowly released my anxiety down into the Earth and let it be absorbed. With eyes closed, I evened out every inhale and exhale until things became clearer, more manageable.

In this life, we are swept up in the commotions around us. Nervous, tense, riddled with stress, and unsure where to even untangle a mess, we forget the simplest of things like our breathing. But when we pause and reconnect, lie down and feel the earth supporting us, find the rhythm once again, all things start to fall into place. Here and now, let your breath be your guide, your focus. Let it serve its purpose to calm and invigorate. Allow the chaos to ensue, but don’t let the chaos overcome you. Your breath keeps you grounded. Inhale peace. Exhale stress.

Today comes with a story:
In 2009 I lived right outside of Philadelphia in a high rise that overlooked Cheltenham. It was my favorite little place to live. My balcony was tucked into the corner. While I felt like I was completely hidden, I am sure everyone saw my morning routine and lack of clothes. My ‘curtains’ actually were pieces of one large sheet cut in half and push pinned to the walls. I only had neighbors on one side. Imagine the show The Big Bang Theory. That was my life (minus me being Kaley Cuoco). And no, they were unable to see my balcony or my morning routines! 😂

In ‘09 I was moving out after spending 4 years living in this building. Maybe I had extra stress. Maybe I wasn’t listening to my body. Maybe I hadn’t treated it the best. Either way, a week before I moved, I passed out and lost control of the entire right side of my body... for four months. My muscle seized so badly I was stuck with my arm to my chest. I had extensive physical therapy for months.
Check out my mermaid pose. The second picture shows the lack of mobility in my right side. I have come leaps and bounds from that phase of my life. And yet knowing this - I still get beyond frustrated with my body - specifically my right side!
If I am breathing (even if it’s wheezing still), able to move, and can think - life is good! Today, I encourage you to do something that is physically outside of your comfort zone. Let it be good for you mentally, physically, and emotionally. Let go of any stigmas or preconceived notions. Get in your uncomfortable zone and let your body move! Our bodies are resilient. Really resilient.
