In September 1974, a few months after Gerald Ford became president of the United States, fifty-six-year-old First Lady Betty Ford went to the Bethesda Naval Hospital for a routine gynecological examination. The physician noticed an abnormal lump in her breast,
and Betty Ford scheduled a biopsy for two days later. The First Lady immediately decided that the American public should know about
her health status and directed the White House to release a public statement.
After further medical consultation, the nodule was surgically removed and a biopsy performed which determine that it was malignant. . . . For which the right breast was removed
As Ford later recalled: “As I look back, I am very pleased that when my breast cancer was detected in 1974, my family and I decided to make public my surgery. I knew it was going to be a shocking announcement to the news media, but I had no idea that over the years my decision would provide an awareness that would save the lives of many women. Through this awareness, women have realized the importance of early detection of breast cancer. I am happy I was able to be part of this realization
