My #familyfoodtribe round up this Friday is all about the best meal of the day (in my opinion!) - BREAKFAST! There are some brilliant ideas this week... @debbiebeharrell cunningly peeled courgettes before grating into porridge and used white chia seeds to avoid any green and black flecks and @tidy_tot tried some zesty carrot pancakes to pack some extra veggies into breakfast time. I loved the look of @the_anonymum baked egg muffins for a savoury slant, and I thought @cookveggielicious sweet potato and black bean quesadillas would be a yummy savoury breakfast/brunch option as well. @makeyourownkindofbeautiful made the most beautiful looking strawberry and yogurt cake which would be my dream “second breakfast” (those with very early risers will understand the need...) as well as some divine rosemary and lemon scones. Loved the look of @hannah_binky blueberry and courgette cookies too. @feeding_little_ones has kindly shared the recipe for her tropical breakfast muffins too which I can’t wait to try! RASPBERRY JAM:

This was so easy to make! Literally a punnet of raspberries, 1tbsp of honey, 2 tbsp of chai seeds and 1/4tsp on vanilla extract. Whizzed up in the food processor and stored in an airtight pot in the fridge. The children loved spreading this on toast this morning! And I loved knowing it didn’t contain refined sugar!

Refined sugar is everywhere - it’s not just in sweets, chocolate and cake. There are so many hidden sugars in junk food, ready meals, sauces, bread, shop brought soups, cereals and even low fat products! Foods with a high sugar content are also known as high-GI foods.

Refined sugar is so bad for us! It’s been scientifically proven to be link to so many health issues and diseases, diabetes and it’s been more recently linked to cancer. It effects your mineral and nutrient absorption, not to mention causes bloating, skin problems and digestive problems. But the trouble is it’s addictive! The more you eat the more you crave.

Did you know that sugar also makes you hungrier! This is because it spikes our blood sugar levels causing high insulin release which in turn confuses the hell out of the hormone leptin; which tells our brain how much energy we have and signals fullness. (Making low fat products the biggest sham.) once this high wears off our body’s are left feeling sluggish and craving more sugar to pick us up again.

If you did only one thing to change your diet; taking out or even cutting right back on refined sugars will do wonders!
