A few Arboretum members attended Sunday's Picket Post Mansion Open House in full roaring 20s regalia. Even their stage names, "Cristal" and "Quinn" were used instead of Gail and Tara (the birth names they adhere to in this century). Over 700 curiosity seekers toured Picket Post House over the weekend and were treated to an architectural and historical spectacle not seen since the last Open House five years ago. We're doing it again on Jan. 7 & 8, 2017. #roaringtwenties #castleontherock #Picketpost #boycethompson #1arb

3 outta 5.

So glad this building did not become a hole in the ground. It should be open for business occupancy in early 2017.

Gorgeous morning at Boyce Thompson Arboretum - even HRH was glad I got her up early to do something active before the intense heat hit. Thanks, @elizabeth.marie.nelson, for introducing us to this gem!

"You ruin your life by tolerating it. At the end of the day you should be excited to be alive. When you settle for anything less than what you innately desire, you destroy the possibility that lives inside of you, and in that way you cheat both yourself and the world of your potential. The next Michelangelo could be sitting behind a Macbook right now writing an invoice for paperclips, because it pays the bills, or because it is comfortable, or because he can tolerate it. Do not let this happen to you. Do not ruin your life this way. Life and work, and life and love, are not irrespective of each other. They are intrinsically linked. We have to strive to do extraordinary work, we have to strive to find extraordinary love. Only then will we tap into an extraordinarily blissful life." — Bianca Sparacino 😘💖🙌🏼🌟🌼🎨💐🦋 📷@Blakeabel

Progress view of the former library wing of the Boyce Thompson Institute. The Fortina pizzeria restaurant is renovating this space, which may open at the end of the summer. Looking forward to having a meal in another former ruin!

Last night I was able see the recently (and ongoingly) renovated Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research in Yonkers, rechristened by Simone Development Companies as the Boyce Thompson Center. In early 2001 I first saw the brick buildings and greenhouses, newly-boarded up and abated by the City of Yonkers in advance of a proposed high school that did not materialize. Several years later Deirdre Hoare contacted me, after seeing photos of the abandoned BTI on hudsonvalleyruins.org, to gather historical information. We proposed that the building be declared a City Landmark, and that it should not be sold as a "tear-down" for redevelopment. Many meetings at City Hall followed, and eventually the selected developer moved on. The site was not landmarked but languished and became a popular exploring location. Then in 2015 Simone Development announced plans to reuse the main BTI building. And last night Deirdre and I and others who advocated for preservation finally saw what we hoped all along that someone one else might see, the reuse potential of the Boyce Thompson Institute now realized.
