Last night I was able see the recently (and ongoingly) renovated Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research in Yonkers, rechristened by Simone Development Companies as the Boyce Thompson Center. In early 2001 I first saw the brick buildings and greenhouses, newly-boarded up and abated by the City of Yonkers in advance of a proposed high school that did not materialize. Several years later Deirdre Hoare contacted me, after seeing photos of the abandoned BTI on hudsonvalleyruins.org, to gather historical information. We proposed that the building be declared a City Landmark, and that it should not be sold as a "tear-down" for redevelopment. Many meetings at City Hall followed, and eventually the selected developer moved on. The site was not landmarked but languished and became a popular exploring location. Then in 2015 Simone Development announced plans to reuse the main BTI building. And last night Deirdre and I and others who advocated for preservation finally saw what we hoped all along that someone one else might see, the reuse potential of the Boyce Thompson Institute now realized.
