50 years on Ali-Liston II is one of the most controversial & debated fights in Boxing history. Marked by plenty of back room shenanigans, an unknown rematch clause in violation of WBA rules brought the 2 together exactly 3 months after 'Cassius Clay' defeated Liston. The commission backed out of hosting the rematch & the WBA stripped Ali of the title. The controversy stems from ‘the phantom punch’ - the short right that dropped Liston like a sack. Ali disbelieving he was hurt, struck the iconic pose standing over Liston & shouted, “get up you bum”. In another ‘long count’ controversy, the ref tried to get Ali to a neutral corner before resuming the count, however the time keeper motioned to the ref that Liston was out & the fight was off.
