My first archery animal - It’s hard to describe this hunt and especially this moment. It was day 7, 50 miles into the hunt, feeling pretty wiped and defeated by the island of Kodiak. Bow hunting has been a grind for me. Just a month earlier I missed an elk at 15 yards, hitting a tree.. This last week on Kodiak I had 3 separate failed stalks and opportunities to kill a deer leading up to this last day. I was down and starting to accept the reality of not fulfilling my goal. There were moments on this trip I wanted to take up a rifle as we had opportunity every day to take deer that way, but I have craved the opportunity to stalk a deer into bow range and make the kill. It’s a weird intimacy hunting with a bow I have been captivated by. So this hunt was a bow hunt for me even if I didn’t come home with a filled tag and box of meat. I decided to hold my bow to the end. But the heavens opened and @jolewilson spotted this buck on our last day half way up a mountain. After about an hour stalk and a 15 yard shot, I have privilege to call this buck my first. The feeling is surreal. I feel incredibly blessed by the opportunity and all those made this hunt possible, especially my love @nichole_potter. This deer was a gift and I can’t wait for the next chance I get to go to full draw.
