Travesty Tuesday, a little feature to showcase a different car or innovation each week that we would all rather forget.
The 2014 nose regulations. Look at the pictures, need I say more?
Not really, but I’m going to anyway. Following the 2009 overhaul, Formula 1 noses began to creep higher and higher. Whilst champions Brawn elected for a low nose, the future could be seen on Toyota, Williams and particularly RedBull’s high noses. 2012 saw the introduction of new regulations forcing lower noses, which gave birth to the ‘stepped’ noses. A vanity panel was allowed in 2013 but 2014 regs changed the height of the front bulkhead and reduced the height of the nosetip drastically. Most teams, eager to keep as much of a ‘high’ nose as possible elected for a single protruding structure - F1 and Ann Summers make for an interesting cross over 👀... Caterham sported a very crude nose early in the year and Toro Rosso was very well endowed. Force India also showed some serious size, but coloured it well, so to hide it as much as possible - if not for the shlong at the front I think this was a very good looking car. Williams and Sauber opted for a more blended and slightly less intimidating tip, whilst McLaren’s member was smaller than most and Manor only really had a stump. Lotus decided two was better than one - interestingly the two projections are of different length, as to have them the same length would contravene the regulations. I was a pretty big fan of the low slotted Ferrari nose, whilst Redbull managed a very normal looking car. Mercedes also looks nice and most how I would imagine F1 wanted to noses to look. All in all this was a year to forget as far as car designs go.
Unsurprisingly, the nose regs would changed again for 2015 making for more attractive cars - however most retain some form of stump at the front, even today. •
