Ironically, I've turned to cooking as a comforter and rather than simple things, I find making complex recipes more satisfying. That process of buying groceries, looking up and saving recipes, making to-cook lists, salvaging vegetables in the fridge, chopping, cooking, making a mess of the kitchen, eating and finally washing up - feels very very mind numbing. It's going through the motions. It's great and just what I need. But I know I will begin to wonder at some point if I am ignoring my degree from MIT and getting an unofficial diploma in cooking instead. Until that day comes, repeat cycle.
