This is a chart from one of my slides at the #PowerliftingSummit. We were discussing the case of a particular lifter I was coaching -- one training block that was particularly successful. As we can see in this chart, it's not because he was doing a super high amount of volume compared to what he was used to. The best answer I've found is that the other variables (primarily exercise selection and intensity) were dialed in to meet the lifter's needs. Volume is important, but it's not the only important thing when it comes to building strength. The more you can optimize your training across all the different variables, the better and more sustainable your progress becomes. Don't be a one-trick-pony that can only shove more volume. Anybody can do that.

Low bar back squat: accidental 374x1 @ RPE 9

Testing openers in my sexy suit. I can't do kilo math: this was supposed to be my 1st heavy single at 341 before testing an opener around 358 or 363, but it's too early and I brainfarted and overshot by 33lbs. That would explain why that 66lb jump from 308 to 374 felt so crushing.

At least I figured it out before I added another 15 lbs. I will find a way to delude myself and turn this into self confidence for the meet.

1 week out! It's been over a year since I last stepped in a platform. Not sure how to feel.

Well, the goal was 315x3 for a new 3rm with #mbslingshot but I hit the hooks and racked it after 2, tying my 2rm with good speed. Added a single after to make it a total of 3 reps. Hot and sweaty today. I did this after a long walk this morning and three speedy squat singles at 365. 7 days out. Tonight was the last big workout before the meet. I have a few REALLY light triples this week, over just two sessions, to keep me moving in the deload, but all the struggle is done and while there were many obstacles in this training cycle, nothing can be done between now and next weekend to make me more prepared. I just have to rest and recover and solidify my body's weight below 183#. Hard part is over. Now I just have to go demonstrate where I am after the past 6 months.

Second to last actual workout before #BossOfNorcal4 next weekend. Deadlift didn't go well cause I'm just getting over being sick for 3 weeks, ending with bronchitis and ALL of the medicine. So here's bench. Double with 235 (didn't feel like switching to 2 plates and 5s when I was going to drop below 225 again immediately after. Sorry my 235 looks less impressive than it would with plates), then first and last at of my 5x5 with 215#. ..........
Would like a weight like 215# to move faster than it did, but it moved and I used some generous pauses, so at least it's looking decent for next weekend to hopefully snag the upper quarter of the 200s. Tomorrow is light squats then 2 very VERY light days next week and I'm going to focus very hard on recovering from all of this until meet day.

Pause squats: 295x3 for 4 sets. Depth is a bit excessive, even for #usapl standards.

Last day of anything heavy before testing openers this Monday. Everything hurts. Bicep is reinjured, so no bench #pr for me this meet. Finished today's workout with bench for a massive 95x5 for 5 sets ๐Ÿ˜ข

OTOH, squat is looking great, deadlift is a wild card. Need #deload so bad.
