|| The Revolution's War on Tribalism || In the 1970s and 80s, the revolutionary socialist government in effect, went to war with tribalism. The government criminalized tribalistic acts which carried consequences of fines and even prison time. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In the place of tribal leaders, the government created community leaders that worked to unify all Somalis around their commonalities. In essence, the government made tribes and ones affiliation to a tribe meaningless and irrelevant.
The government put in great effort to inform the public on the dangers of tribalism. The propaganda poster in the back illustrates Tribalism, in the form of a skeleton, meant to emphasize danger, being stabbed and effectively being killed by the revolution.
These types of messages could be found across the country at the time. It allowed Somalis to live peacefully and happily with one another in every corner of Somaliweyne. It allowed us to unite around Somalinimo and ditch the backwards and cancerous mindset of tribalism.
If we are to live prosperously as we had in those days, we must work to inform the wider public about the dangers of tribalism. This and only this will lead to everlasting peace and stability in our beautiful country.
