One exercise I see many people struggle to do correctly and feel in the right muscle groups is the Romanian Deadlift. This is a great compound exercise for the widely neglected posterior chain including the hamstrings, glutes and erector spinae. Here is a great example of good and poor technique, while to most people this might seem quite similar, there are some major differences.

Firstly the back should always maintain a neutral position with a natural lumbar arch so ensure you activate your core and avoid rounding the spine.

Secondly the hips need to be pushed right back until the hamstrings feel really tight and this will help you put the weight through your heels rather than your forefoot.

Finally the bar should be keep nice and close to the shins which is going to take any unnecessary pressure off the lower back.

How far the bar comes down towards the ground is going to depend on individual anatomy, your current level of flexibility and the ground clearance or size of the weights being used.

You are now ready to execute the lift properly and to do so, concentrate on moving the weight with your legs and hips by contracting the hamstrings. Never try to lift the weight with your arms, you are simply just holding on to the bar.

Finish by squeezing the glutes to lock out the lift in an upright position where the ankles, hips and shoulders are in vertical alignment. Remember to achieve a strong mind to muscle connection here and you will get more from this highly effective exercise.
