Another small Christmas Carol for today’s #booksellersbreakfast I have added another photo so you can see Bob Cratchit and Tiny Tim on the back cover. These little abridged paperbacks were produced as advertising booklets with a calendar for the following year inside the front cover and large type tales of the cures and remedies that Mother Seigel’s Syrup could achieve. Blood, skin, throats, coughs, pallid cheeks...there is nothing this syrup cannot cure. To quote... “A new world opened to her when Mother Seigel’s Syrup was used, and all her suffering vanished.” The text of Dickens’s Christmas classic, apart from page one, is small and cramped so your eyes are inevitably drawn to the dodgy benefit stories of the Syrup. It is the early 20th century version of our irritating pop up adverts. This was produced in 1908 and we are selling it for £20. The coloured illustrated covers are a true delight.
I am feeling a little lethargic today so I thought a large cooked breakfast with the last of the green heritage tomatoes - fried of course - would help. I have eaten the spinach, the egg and the tomatoes but I’m leaving the meat bit for later sandwiches.
This post is for @contraryreader - please go to her story as soon as possible to see a wonderful speech by her son, Charley Holmes, looking as if he stepped out of 1908 in his Ulster and hat. He has decided something about Hay and I think we should run a vote on it. Charley is the official mascot of our Murder and Mayhem Shop and delights us every time he visits.
I must add it is not Kelly his mum that encourages him to dress up as Holmes, it is all his on doing though his parents are a support. The last visit was the first time I saw him in modern dress and he was very upset that his parents hadn’t thought there was time after football to get him back home to change before coming to #hayonwye
