Have you read any Jessie Burton? I read The Miniaturist on holiday in Italy and adored it, although it wasn't what I expected. Fingers crossed The Muse will be the same!

How are all your shelves so photogenic? Anyway, here’s my #sundayshelfie - mostly poetry, many post-it notes. #poetryshelf #poetryshelfie #shelfie #bookshelf #bookstagramuk #bookworm #bookaddict #poetryaddict

Although it’s felt like it for a while, today it is officially Autumn here in the UK.

I haven’t read Ali Smith before, but I’ve heard a lot of great things about her writing and this is the perfect story at what is my favourite time of the year.

Although it feels like you’re supposed to love Summer the most, I have a sneaky suspicion that Autumn is most people’s favourite as what’s not to like - fireworks, Halloween, cosy nights in with hot chocolate and of course, the build up to Christmas!

What are your favourite Autumn reads?

I’m hoping this might be one of mine so if you’d like to join me in this read, sign up in the comments and don't forget to tag anyone else who may enjoy it!

You will all then be added to a private group chat where we can discuss the book as we read it rather than all at once at the end. It’s a great way to unpick a story and chat to new people.

Synopsis: Daniel Gluck, a 101-year-old former songwriter, lies asleep and dreaming in his care home. He is regularly visited by 32-year-old Elisabeth Demand, who had been his next door neighbour as a young child.

Her mother had disapproved of their early friendship, based on her belief that Daniel was gay, but Elisabeth had nevertheless formed a close bond with him and been inspired by his descriptions of works of art.
As a consequence of his influence on her, Elisabeth is now a junior arts lecturer at a London university.
The story largely alternates between Daniel's prolonged dreams as he edges closer to death, and Elisabeth's recollections of the origins of their friendship and its repercussions.

I know this is a long shot, but you’ve got to be in it to win it right? Hi Miranda, my name is Charline, I’m 33 and from Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 I love reading and can’t go anywhere without a book. The library is one of my favourite places and I have a never ending TBR list. Bookmarks are kind of my thing, I just can’t stop buying them. Soon, I’ll have a different bookmark for every book I own 🙈
I enjoy being part of this bookstagram community and would love to share your shop and bookmarks with my followers. I actively use stories and would love to be part of your team. You have so many cute designs (the watercolour Fox is my favourite) which are perfect for any bookworm.
Thank you for this opportunity and good luck to all who enter 💖 PS I don’t have any cute animals, but unicorns count, right?

Day 23 of #readwithusseptember today’s prompt is Short Story Sunday
.
I’ve never really been a fan of short stories if I’m honest. I’ve always been more drawn to long reads. However, when I saw that my Favourite authors Haruki Murakami had a short story book called Men Without Women I couldn’t give it a miss😊
.
Do you like short stories? Which ones would you recommend ?

Day 6 of @emi1y_morgan’s #writeupseptember was #fallfavourites - this is my FAVOURITE prompt because I love, love, love everything about autumn! Boots 🍁 Scarves 🍁 Jumpers 🍁 Autumn leaves 🍁 Bonfires 🍁 Hot chocolate 🍁 Soups 🍁 Autumnal music, films and books 🍁 ALL. THE. AUTUMN. THINGS! I just love the feeling in the air at this time of year: there’s a sort of anticipation that comes on low, golden sunlight and the edge of a chill breeze. The world smells different and seems to slow, as if it starts to curl up under it’s own blanket of flame coloured leaves, ready for the coming sleep of winter. Just beautiful.💛 QOTD: What’s your favourite thing about autumn?

If you could travel through time, when (and where) would you travel to? Past or future? I would love to go to the past but I think that my curiosity about the future would make it impossible to resist travelling forward in time

I have just started reading Time's Convert by the incredible @debharkness. I am currently resisting the temptation to devour it as fast as I can, I am channelling my inner vampire. It is so wonderful to be back in the world of All Souls

🌿
Calling all bookworms - does this picture qualify as a #shelfie or is it better described as #stacks? These are the books in my room which are mostly TBR, with some rereads in there for good measure (“Rebecca” has sneaked in for a picture). Basically I have plans for this lot, and it would be fair to say that it’s out of control! Do you see anything that I should read imminently? Hope your Sunday is going well.🌿

#bookreview This is a review of two books really - the book I thought I’d be reading and the book I actually read. I picked up The Nightingale mainly because of the comparisons with All the light we cannot see which is my favourite read of the year and was so beautifully written that the prose made me re-read passages just to feel them again. Both books are set during WW2 in France and that’s really where the similarity ends. I therefore found the first 100 pages frustrating - it seemed packed with melodramatic pitfalls and lots of “oh look at all the research I did” that wasn’t natural. However, at this point I pulled myself together, took off my critical cap and embraced it for what it was: a great story with characters that were empathetic and enough emotion to evoke a few welling-eye moments. This isn’t a literary masterpiece but it is a good female oriented novel that I enjoyed once I let myself. Therefore any weaknesses were more to do with my own inflated expectations. It’s a good book I’d recommend- it’s just not the great book I hoped for but that’s ok. ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 stars .

A rainy Sunday afternoon is made for curling up with the latest @foxedquarterly issue and a slice of homemade Dorset apple cake. I had some 'sops of wine' apples (isn't that the best name?!) to use and decided they'd be perfect in a cake. They're lovely - blushing pink, faintly tart and they hold their shape well when baked. What bliss! Hope you're all having an enjoyable Sunday too.

I’ve seen several posts about Rachel Cusk’s recent trilogy and they reminded me how much I love her writing. 📚
The Country Life is one of my favourite books. Arlington Row is completely different, based in an English suburb it takes place over a single day and explores each character before they come together for a dinner party.
Have you read her recent books? Would you recommend them?
