One of my biggest pet peeves is being late. I absolutely cannot tolerate lateness and making others wait. Us Malaysians, we’re notorious for being unapologetically late, calling it the ‘Malaysian timing’. Nonetheless, I believe that being punctual is essential in our daily lives, greatly enhancing our lives and the lives of those around us.
Being late is unacceptable - it’s disrespectful, inconsiderate, irresponsible and just plain rude. While that sounds harsh, it’s the truth and something that should be said more often. I don’t care if you’re attending a date, an interview, or a coffee with friends – your punctuality says a lot about you.
Being late bothers me so much that just thinking about it makes me anxious. My being late, which does rarely happen, usually causes me to break out into a nervous sweat. Sometimes a true emergency happens, or an unexpected event occurs. When it happens, I try to give a very detailed account of why I was late, apologize profusely, make sure the other person knows that I take it very seriously, and assure them it won’t happen again.
Yet, very few people I’ve met are like me; hence I’ve been called uptight or unreasonable for being punctual.
The longest I’ve ever waited for someone was 2 hours - and these people come up with ridiculous excuses to explain their lateness. Just to list a few :
“The traffic was bad”
“I was so caught up in work I didn’t realise the time”
“I was busy”
Everyone likes to equate busyness with importance, but successful people know that’s f*cking bullshit. It just signals that you can’t prioritize, or say “no,” neither of which is an endearing trait.
Being in Med school, managing my finances, balancing my fitness routine, strict diet, meaningful relationships whilst maintaining a High Cohort mark for every exam is not easy. I am busy as can be and work extremely hard to achieve my goals.
Yet, I never give the excuse of being busy to be late. Being late just shows that you don’t value the other party’s time.
I hardly have any time to spare for myself let alone scheduling in time for you in my life. Time is precious - I value my time and if you can’t respect that you don’t deserve it. #motivationmonday
