Thank you to the lovely @jenmurfee and @harperbooks for my free copy of UNSHELTERED by @iambkingsolver - all opinions are my own.
.
This is a powerful book that carries a lot of weight on politics, the environment, science, and humanity. The Poisonwood Bible will forever be a favorite of mine but this one will definitely stay with me for years. I also believe that later upon reflection, this novel will be revered.
.
The narrative is told in multiple storylines and timelines. In present day, we follow Willa Knox, a freelance journalist, her husband and college professor Iano, two grown children, and her right wing father-in-law who is in poor health. They have just moved to Vineland, NJ to a dilapidated house and Willa is charged with taking care of her baby grandson and father-in-law. They are struggling financially, worried about the future, and wondering how so much of what they worked for has slipped away.
.
In juxtaposition, Kingsolver takes us to the past of the 1870s, where the community where Willa lives in the present was considered an ideal place. We follow 19-year-old Mary Treat, who is a self-taught naturalist and who corresponds with Charles Darwin, and Thatcher Greenwood, who moved to Vineland to teach science and lives in the same dilapidated house, which he also struggles to take care of. He becomes very impressed with his neighbor Mary and grapples with teaching Darwin’s theory in a school that is reluctant to learn.
.
As you can tell, there is a lot to digest. I really love Kingsolver’s writing style and how she never fails to pull you into the story. It can seem as if you are reading two separate books but there are common threads here. I love Willa’s daughter Tig and really did not care for her father-in-law. This book is a tad on the depressing side but mostly because these are realistic, relevant topics. If you are interested in politically charged, introspective fiction that include topics of healthcare, climate change, and creationism versus evolution, then this is for you. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“It has been years since Helen Franklin left England. In Prague, working as a translator, she has found a home of sorts—or, at least, refuge. That changes when her friend Karel discovers a mysterious letter in the library, a strange confession and a curious warning that speaks of Melmoth the Witness, a dark legend found in obscure fairy tales and antique village lore. As such superstition has it, Melmoth travels through the ages, dooming those she persuades to join her to a damnation of timeless, itinerant solitude. To Helen it all seems the stuff of unenlightened fantasy. But, unaware, as she wanders the cobblestone streets Helen is being watched. And then Karel disappears. . . .” ✨✨

I am so excited to share this newly released book called BIBLIOPHILE, written and illustrated by @jane_mount. Let me start by saying that it is the best non-fiction book I have seen in many years! It is a book made for every book lover.
Considered an illustrated miscellany, this beautifully illustrated book is full of bookish people, trivia, quizzes, bookshops from around the world, lists of the best books in different genres, iconic book covers, Little Free Libraries, writing rooms, stack of books and so much more. I can’t stress enough how every single page in this book is an explosion of colourful literary information and images. I will put some of interior pages on my insta story for you to see what I am talking about, but for now, feel free to gawk at the cover here which shows an illustrated stack of some of our favourite classics. As you can see, I’ve tried to recreate the stack. Turns out I do not own all the classics out there. 😆 .
Happy reading to you and yours! .

A moment of calm...
We’ve visited a small Swedish town today, called Eksjö.
It’s really lovely with old, beautiful wooden houses. I have just shared a glimpse in stories, if you’re interested ❤️

In honor of the anniversary of the publication of Jane Eyre on this day in 1847, I thought I’d share this beautiful @lucyintheskycreations print! I’m so excited to partner with Lucy once again to share her products with you. You can use the code Kindred12 for 15% off your order. I’m going to read a few chapters today to celebrate. I might even watch the adaptation later tonight. Which one is your favorite?

Thank you so much @tin_house for my free copy of GIRLS WRITE NOW 🌻🌻
.
I really love the concept of this anthology - These impressive writers use their own voice to write their story with raw honesty, heart, and emotion - it’s a book I’d recommend to any young reader. This important collection is also interwoven with advice from known authors such as Roxanne Gay, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Zadie Smith, Gloria Steinem, and Lena Dunham. 🌻🌻
.
“GIRLS WRITE NOW offers a brave and timely portrait of teenage-girl life in the United States over the past twenty years. They're working part-time jobs to make ends meet, deciding to wear a hijab to school, sharing a first kiss, coming out to their parents, confronting violence and bullying, and immigrating to a new country while holding onto their heritage. Through it all, these young writers tackle issues of race, gender, poverty, sex, education, politics, family, and friendship. Together their narratives capture indelible snapshots of the past and lay bare hopes, insecurities, and wisdom for the future.”🌻🌻

I'm almost finished with The Alice Network. It's such a great book. I'm trying to decide what to read next. I'm torn between Frankenstein or Dracula. Which one do you recommend? I have not read either but I'm looking forward to it. 🌾🌾🌾🌾🌾🌾🌾🌾🌾🌾🌾🌾🌾🌾

Thank you @tlcbooktours and @atriabooks for my lovely free copy of THE GIRL THEY LEFT BEHIND by Roxanne Veletzos. Perfect for fans of Lilac Girls and Sarah’s Key....sounds amazing, right?!! 📖💐
.
“On a freezing night in January 1941, a little Jewish girl is found on the steps of an apartment building in Bucharest. With Romania recently allied with the Nazis, the Jewish population is in grave danger, undergoing increasingly violent persecution. The girl is placed in an orphanage and eventually adopted by a wealthy childless couple who name her Natalia. As she assimilates into her new life, she all but forgets the parents who were forced to leave her behind. They are even further from her mind when Romania falls under Soviet occupation.
.
Yet, as Natalia comes of age in a bleak and hopeless world, traces of her identity pierce the surface of her everyday life, leading gradually to a discovery that will change her destiny. She has a secret crush on Victor, an intense young man who as an impoverished student befriended her family long ago. Years later, when Natalia is in her early twenties and working at a warehouse packing fruit, she and Victor, now an important official in the Communist regime, cross paths again. This time they are fatefully drawn into a passionate affair despite the obstacles swirling around them and Victor’s dark secrets.
.
When Natalia is suddenly offered a one-time chance at freedom, Victor is determined to help her escape, even if it means losing her. Natalia must make an agonizing decision: remain in Bucharest with her beloved adoptive parents and the man she has come to love, or seize the chance to finally live life on her own terms, and to confront the painful enigma of her past.”

Happy Monday! If you’re anything like me then the idea of jumping inside a book and walking around with your favourite characters in wonderful settings is a perfect daydream. George decided to have a go 😹 What fictional worlds and locations would you jump into? It’s a difficult choice but I’d like to go shopping in Diagon Alley, have lunch at Longbourn, Champagne with Gatsby and roll down a street in a tyre with Scout. .

How do you pamper yourself?

I don't enjoy getting pedicures or facials. I don't know why. I've always been that way. I do enjoy treating myself to a delicious scone with a nice cup of tea. Collecting certain books is also another way i pamper myself lol although it can be a little too much.

I hope you have had a wonderful weekend. I'm thankful that both of the boys got home safely from their mission trips 😊 they were unforgettable adventures for both of them. One went to NY and the other to Globe. I'm so happy for this opportunities where they get to experience the world from a different perspective. 💕

#therentcollector is an incredible book that has been on my mind recently. The deplorable conditions the characters made their lives in and called home still haunt me years later. I just can’t comprehend that in 2018 there are people in the world living in squalor in an actual trash dump. It’s shocking and deplorable. The story tugged at the heartstrings of everyone in bookclub and a lively discussion ensued. Have any of you read this one?

Sunny thoughts on a snowy day...

Currently Reading 📖: Always by Sarah Jio 💖 I’m not that far in yet but I’m loving the alternating chapters from present day to 1996 and all the music references of the 90s! Fade Into You by Mazzy Star is one of my favorite songs. 💖 It’s one of those songs that makes you feel something inside when you listen to it. 🎧 I’ve been loving 90s music lately. Do you have any favorite songs from the 90s? || #booktoberfest #always #sarahjio #booksandflowers #booksandblooms #bookphotography #bookblog #bookphoto #bookblogger #bookishfeatures #bookstagramfeature #prettybooks #lovelybooks #read #reading #bookish #booklover #bookworm #instagram #booknerd #booksofinstagram #booksoninstagram #bookstagram #bibliophile #carpelibrum #bookfeaturepage #igreads #bookstagramfeature

I’ve been revisiting a few old favourites recently which is not something I’ve been in the habit of doing. I’ll rewatch favourite films all the time but up until this year there were only a couple of books I would reread. I think in the past it’s been about time - why reread when you can discover something new? But the books that I’ve gone back to have definitely shown me that with a reread you discover something new. I haven’t been disappointed with any, only more in love with them - I’ve noticed more about the language and style; I’ve found different characters more interesting. I’m sure part of this is just getting older and having different inference skills but I think it also helps going into a familiar story and being able to focus much more closely on all the other ingredients that make a book so good. I’m now considering books I want to re-read - Jane Eyre is very high up, as is Gone with the Wind (two favourites of mine). How do you approach re-reads? .

My 14 year old was helping me enter the entire collection of totes and mugs and prints on to my personal website. When he came upon this particular print. He said that this was his favorite print. I thought, that is so awesome okay whatever happens from here it's okay because he thinks going to the library is cool. My job here is done LOL
I think if we can instill the love of reading to our children we are preparing them for a better future.

I hope that you are having a wonderful Saturday. We are enjoying the rain here in Arizona.

This week in parliament: Jeremy Corbyn has been challenging Theresa May’s claims that austerity is ending in the UK. Whatever your views on where we are now, this #VintageMini provides an examination of how the austerity measures that have characterised the past decade came about, written in an intelligent yet accessible way. Plus, it’s short, which gave me more time to binge-watch Killing Eve on iPlayer 😆 Have you seen it yet? It’s SO good!
