“It is impossible to survive in a prolonged state of reality.” . .................. “I stepped into the bookshop and breathed in that perfume of paper and magic that strangely no one had ever thought of bottling.”
. . #carlosruiszafon .
I was so enchanted by #theshadowofthewind I had to dug into the second installment of #Thecemeteryofforgottenbooks right away.
A prequel to the first, this story revolves around 1920 and narrates a tale of David Martin. A novelist by occupation, he writes crime thrillers under a pseudonym and is leeched off by his publishers. With great patience and difficulty, finally his serious novel is published but is cruelly critiqued. Ironically his other novel that he writes for his benefactor is well praised by the same critics. Disappointed, he takes an offer to write a religious novel for a mysterious French editor Andreas Corelli. The ominous and omnipresent presence of Corelli is haunting. David loses his first love; couldn't confess to his second and strange, devilish events start to punctuate his life.
The plot takes a while to catch up with the story. The prose is brilliant. The gothic atmosphere and mysticism keeps you glued to the pages. But slowly it takes an unprecedented turn and starts making no sense. Whether it's 'Satan himself' or 'the bewildered tumour riddled mind diving into his erratic mind' playing tricks - its hard to tell. The end left a bitter taste with too many unanswered questions. Luckily there is book number three, so I dived into it without any more musings.

“Sufferers are more than the sum of their suffering, but the rest of the world doesn’t see that.”
This novel is so dark and devious and delicious I don’t even know what to say!!! I love characters that are unlikable and unreliable. I love when we see the manipulative underbelly of good intentions. When we get dirty secrets, and bad decisions, and are left wondering who to trust. This novel is full of psychological suspense, and has such a bite to it. Its manipulative and awful in all the best ways! Full review on my blog, link in my bio! Thank you @booksparks @atriabooks for the review copy!!!
Unreliable narrators are always fun, but #theelizas takes unreliable and runs wild!!! Who do you trust when you can’t even trust yourself? This is such a good conversation about psychology and mental health. Beyond the obvious psychological conditions in the plot, Eliza gets all kinds of labels and assumptions placed on her, including from herself. It’s so much easier to do that instead of trying to understand. And how often do we do that in real life? Eliza has to be her own advocate, and the fact that she doesn’t even know if she can trust herself makes this all the more impressive! And important. This book is fiction, but there are some very real things happening in these pages. Be warned though! This is dark, full of manipulation, lies, and unpleasant people. Obviously, I loved it!!!
Who is your favorite unreliable narrator???

I read this book almost a year and a half ago and absolutely loved it! It was the first nonfiction I’d read in years and I think I read it in two days. It’s so hilarious! And I’m sure part of the reason I love it so much is because Anna Kendrick has such a strong personality and voice (literally and figuratively), so it was easy imagining her saying everything in the book. I highly recommend it! Even if you’re not sure you like nonfiction. Give it a go!

From New York Times Bestselling author Penelope Douglas comes a new forbidden love story…

He took me in when I had nowhere else to go.

He doesn’t use me, hurt me, or forget about me. He doesn’t treat me like I’m nothing, take me for granted, or make me feel unsafe.
He remembers me, laughs with me, and looks at me. He listens to me, protects me, and sees me. I can feel his eyes on me over the breakfast table, and my heart pumps so hard when I hear him pull in the driveway after work.
I have to stop this. It can’t happen.
My sister once told me there are no good men, and if you find one, he’s probably unavailable.
Only Pike Lawson isn’t the unavailable one.
I am.

I took her in, because I thought I was helping.

She’d cook a few meals and clean up a little. It was an easy arrangement.
As the days go by, though, it’s becoming anything but easy. I have to stop my mind from drifting to her and stop holding my breath every time I bump into her in the house. I can’t touch her, and I shouldn’t want to.
The more I find my path crossing hers, though, the more she’s becoming a part of me.
But we’re not free to give into this. She’s nineteen, and I’m thirty-eight.
And her boyfriend’s father.
Unfortunately, they both just moved into my house. *BIRTHDAY GIRL is a stand-alone, contemporary romance suitable for ages 18+. ________________________________________________

“Perhaps there is some secret sort of homing instinct in books that brings them to their perfect readers."
This is such a gem of a book! Set in Britain in 1946, a time when everyone is emerging from the horror of the Second World War, writer Juliet Ashton is fresh off a book tour and hunting around for the topic of her next book. She receives a letter from a stranger named Dawsey Adams. He is a pig farmer from the British Island of Guernsey and found her details written in the front of a second-hand book. He writes to ask where he can find more books from the same author.
It is through the course of this correspondence that Juliet learns how the island was occupied by the Nazis throughout the war and how the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society came into being. Soon she is corresponding with a motley crew of islanders--from a white witch who makes terrible concoctions, to an elderly farmer, and a butler who impersonated a Lord throughout the occupation.
To tell you much more would be to spoil the natural and entertaining way this story unfolds. This is a story of finding light in dark places, of love and resilience, and of how books can unite people from all walks of life. .

“I am fearful most men of this age are like you. They have forgotten what it is to huddle in a hut with the beasts and demons howling outside their door. They no longer have want of a great and terrible spirit to protect them. They have lost their fear of the wild and with it their need to believe. And I cannot blame them, for they now have the power to chase away the shadows with a mere flick of a switch. So I must ask myself, what role can I play in a world where men worship the moving-picture box, where they make and consume potions that eat away their own brains, where they ravage and pillage entire mountains, kill the very earth itself? Mankind has lost its connection to the land, to the earth, to the beasts and spirits. They gather their food not from the forest and fields, but from plastic bins and ice boxes. Their lives are no longer tied to the cycles of the seasons and the harvest, no longer do they need the Yule Lord to chase away the winter darkness and usher in the light of spring. Man has only himself to fear now . . . he has become his own worst devil.” - Krampus: the Yule Lord by Brom

Hello my bookworms. So the quote above just speaks to me on a spiritual level lol. But, I love this picture. I had to take it quickly when no kids were around so it was quite difficult since I didn’t want the parents to think I was taking pictures of their children 😅🙈
