Beatrix Potter has been the subject of many biographies, but far and away the best one is the most recent, by Linda Lear.
Potter is a fascinating subject for a biography, and Lear's book perfectly captures her spirited nature. We know Potter as a children's author, but she was also a class rebel, an artist, a shrewd businesswoman, a respected botanist and a pioneering conservationist. Lear deftly weaves the fragments of Potter's life into a compelling narrative, and this biography never struggles with that "school textbook" feel that ruins many a good non-fiction book.
As so many of her time, Potter was a keen letter writer, and so much of this biography comes directly from Potter own words. It is wonderful to get a glimpse of her. Despite being a source of disapproval to her friends and relatives for much of her life, she is never ground down by this, and always displays a confident and amusing persona, happily aware of the parts of her character considered to be "faults".
"To Woodcote," she wrote, "to stay with the Roscoes, which I enjoyed much, being splendid weather and the visit too short for friction." 😊
