There's still a lot of controversy about what happened 16 years and four days ago today (9/11/01)... The one thing that we can all agree on is that we shouldn't forget the lives lost and the attack against our Great Nation. I wholeheartedly agree and my sympathies go out to the families that lost loved ones in NYC. Something else worth remembering however, is what we've done about it since. Regardless of what you believe happened that day or why, what happened after is fact, and has changed the course of human civilization. Our own government used the attacks as a guise to strip Constitutional rights away from American citizens, to take power from the hands of the people, and even to turn the type of "Patriot" our country was founded by into "domestic terrorists". As if by some cruel joke, this began immediately after the 9/11 attack and went into effect as the "patriot act". The 9/11 attacks also got a lot of young men, like myself, fired up and ready to serve their country. It was great to see everyone unite against terrorism and want to stand up for their fellow Americans and for freedom. The problem is no stand for freedom was ever made. Plenty of young men fought and died for their country, but in vain it would now seem. The patriot act simply gave the government too much power and they began stripping our personal freedoms before any fighting began. Then, instead of fighting terrorism, we began creating terrorists. For some reason we decided not to use the great military men at our disposal in an effective manner. We used those men to occupy lands and hand out billions of taxpayer dollars to locals who didn't want us there. Then came the drone strikes. Indiscriminate bombings with catastrophic civilian casualties. The US pushing buttons, killing innocents, and turning the surviving family into terrorists. We can't change the past, but we can damn sure change our course and maybe become the Land of the Free again one day if we unite and stand together as one people in defense of our liberties.
