How do I *really* feel about my weight gain?

##

I've shared it many times that gaining weight made me healthier and feel better. It was the necessary thing to do recover from #overtraining and hypothalamic amenorrhea. I do have more energy and I sleep much better than I did before, I don't train like my life depended on it, and I don't skip meals. So, there’s a lot more freedom and I’m healthier.

##

However that doesn't mean that I like the way I look more than the way I looked a year ago. Aesthetically, I did like my leaner and more muscular body better. I do think #bodypositivity is great and I like it, but that doesn't mean that I can't like, just aesthetically, one body better than the other.
##

BUT: All that doesn't mean that *we* are better people if we have one type of body or the other type of body. We are still the same person on the inside, even if we change on the outside. And most importantly- health needs to come first, always. This was my goal for 2017 and is also for this year.
##

White Rice vs. Brown Rice
.
As is commonplace when dieting or looking to improve health, people will often substitute certain foods for their ‘healthier’ counterparts. A potential problem arises if this food swap is not suited to taste preferences. Inevitably, adherence will diminish and one will revert back to previous dietary habits.
.
I am all for people to experiment with new, healthful foods (especially vegetables!) and encourage a wide array of whole, nutrient dense food sources as part of a balanced diet.
.
However, for fat loss, a diet should initially be constructed based on personal taste preferences to maximise dietary adherence.
.
Don’t be of the mindset that you must avoid specific foods that you enjoy when looking to lose body fat! A certain level of dietary restraint is unavoidable when adhering to a calorie deficit but being 100% rigid, in the long-term, is a recipe for disaster (pardon the pun).
.
Take-home - although brown rice has a higher fibre content and trumps white rice for the majority of the available micronutrients.
.
Ultimately, for healthy individuals and within the context of a well-balanced, nutrient-rich diet, personal preference should dictate the choice of white vs. brown rice.
.
Who prefers brown rice anyway…

I decided to write about dairy today. As I have seen many people in the last couple weeks with each or some the issues in this post.
1. Let's talk about body odour first. Body odour happens as the result of what is released when bacteria breaks down the protein in sweat. One of the biggest surprises clients have when they remove dairy is that their sweat smells less strong. Possibly due to less acidity or less bacteria in their system.

2. The second thing I have noticed, is a reduction in body fat and weight. From the most conditioned client to the client higher in body fat. All of them look and get leaner when dairy is removed. I see almost a film of water fluid or mucous come over people that have dairy. Some children or people show this as more ear nose and throat issues.
3. Acne! Listen up my youth or anyone who suffers from this. It isn't always dairy. But when acne is the issue, escpecially around the mouth, cheeks or between the eyes, dairy is the first thing I remove.
4. Poor digestion. This means irregular bowel movements. Gassy, bloated or distended hard midsections. Dairy inflammes the system. The gut and lower GI. Removing dairy is first on the list for better digestion, elimination or stomach protrusion. I am also seeing a large trend for women with horrible cycles/hysterectomy and dairy usage. But I have more direct research to do.
Next week I will drop a video with more on this topic! post any things you noticed when you added in or removed dairy!👇🏾

Ever wonder how some people seem to be able to eat anything and stay lean? Got a friend who has pizza for breakfast and lunch and maintains a six pack? It’s all in the spontaneous movements.
__
Research shows some people are just born with an innate drive to move more, especially when there’s an abundance of calories available. [Ravussin et al., 1986] They perform more Spontaneous Physical Activity (SPA). Examples of SPA are:
__
Fidgeting (foot/hand tapping, wobbling on feet, etc.) __
Changing posture (on a chair)
__
Making gestures when you’re speaking
__
Random movements (playing with hair, chewing on pencil, etc.) __
Performing more SPA is the way their bodies adapt to a higher caloric intake than they need. It's an important component of adaptive thermogenesis (next to lower resting metabolism). __
Other (less fortunate) people seem to be less ‘adaptive’ to this extra energy availability. They don’t become more fidgety, and the extra energy just gets stored as body fat. [Johanssen et al., 2008] On the bright side, that does save money on the food bill if you’re trying to gain weight!
__
So how spontaneously active can someone actually get? Well, research shows SPA can range from 138 to 685 calories per day! [Ravussin, 1986] Meaning your annoying friend may be able to eat another half pizza per day without gaining any additional fat.
__
In practice, if you’re very adaptive to calorie intake (highly fidgety), slowly increase your calories and closely watch how your body weight reacts.
__
If you’re not that adaptive to calorie intake (not very fidgety), aim for a small caloric surplus over your calculated maintenance.
__
For 2 people with the exact same body weight and lifestyle, one could bulk on 4000 calories per day, while the other struggles to keep body fat levels in check at 3200 calories per day.

It’s true, I don’t deadlift, I fucking hate deadlifting, the length of my femur makes it a very uncomfortable movement for me, so I just don’t do it. I rack pull, suits me better, I enjoy the movement more and I don’t have to force myself to do a movement that I hate.

The deadlift is a lower body and back builder, i can develop my legs elsewhere, arguably more efficiently, as on my leg days I can have lower body focus, and on my back day I don’t hinder my leg recovery. To be honest it wouldn’t matter what arguments were presented for me to programme this movement again, I just hate it.
My point is you do not have to do the conventional movements just because someone said they were how they got their mad gains, tailor your workout to suit you, enjoy your training and do it for a long time.
I do not transfer this bias onto clients, I implement deadlifts where necessary, but I feel people really don’t approach this exercise with the caution they should, and go heavy long before they are really can.

Why did you start working out? 🤔
-
The first time I stepped foot into a gym was late 2014 (17 years old). When I first started going to the gym I only wanted to lose weight (body-fat), but as time went on it eventually turned into so much more.
-
I started lifting weights in 2015 (18 years old) where I took it upon myself to invest in a coach @3dmj_godfather ... Believe it, or not that ended up being the best decision of my life because I learned so much. It was around early 2016 where I started to take lifting weights more seriously. 🏋🏽‍♂️
-
Around that time I wasn’t into socializing that much because I was really insecure about how I looked. Lol. Now that I’m older I look back and realize that I felt a sense of belonging when I went to the gym. It was an outlet for me to relieve my stresses and anxieties for the day.
-
Other than my personal reasons being able to workout everyday allows me to not only feel good physically, but mentally too. There are tons of qualities that I’ve developed through lifting weights (discipline, dedication, persistence, patience, etc..) that carry over to other areas of my life as well.
-
I’m curious what you guys have to say! Why did you start lifting weights? 👇🏽

💪🏼ARNOLD GOES VEGAN?!💪🏼

Has Arnold gone vegan?! Not quite, but he does promote the change by going a few days without consuming meat. Why has the bodybuilding legend started to promote the vegan lifestyle?! To help save the environment! ▪
Here's a little snippet from an interview with Arnold asking him on his view points of a plant-based diet:

Interviewer: "There's a whole generation of young men that want to eat meat and whey powder to look like the terminator"

Arnold:"luckily we know that you can get your protein source from many different ways. You can get it through vegetables if you're a vegetarian" "...You have addressed a very important issue, which is that 28% of the green house gases come from eating meat and from raising cattle"

What's your why? Find it and let that push you to get to the gym everyday to work on your own health and fitness
