First movie review! This will be the format I use for it. -
Now I recently joined the niche horror website, Shudder, to expand to the vast world of global independent horrors! Bodom attracted me due to the fact that it's based off the real life murders of four teenagers near Lake Bodom (Finland) back in the 60's.
Let me first start off by saying this movie is NOT in English, but imo that shouldn't matter. The overall vibe and pace is incredible. It puts a twist on the traditional slasher horror, and brings much more suspense and overall drama to it. The initial idea is that four new teenagers return to Bodom in order to try and figure out the missing parts of the original murders. However not everyone is on the same page, and things turn ugly... in terms of overall acting it isn't immaculate, but the dialogue is surprisingly well written. It's just the delivery that lacks in some parts. In others it shines. The scare factor isn't in anyways "jump scary" where it relies on the tension to get you to react. Instead it has subtle build and a rather rapid decline. This movie is short in length, and it FLIES by. Even so, the pacing of it is exceptionally well done. What it lacks in budget (in my opinion low budget horrors are often better than the franchises with loaded budgets) it makes up in overall vibe & delivery. It makes you question hoe FAR would you go for something you want. -
Overall; I would give it an A- for the fact that I didn't feel connected to any of the characters at all (even tho you never do, really in a horror) & I felt like some dialogue fell flat. Ultimately though, I found myself enjoying it from start to finish! -
