Australian midwife Maet Pearson @maetscott was banned from Facebook for sharing this photo.
I mean, come ON. She's a midwife! We birthy types look at photos like this and just *melt*. Maet said, "She is having her first post-natal bath with baby and baby was very relaxed." I am THRILLED that my Post Natal Bliss herbs can bring healing and comfort and relaxation to newborn mothers and their gorgeous babies. .
But I am calling out media and social media. In the past week, women have been shamed for birthing trauma-free outside the obstetric system; shamed for seeking natural health, shamed for eating healthy food, and now - shamed for normal, healthy post-partum images.
Those responsible might say that no put-down of women is meant and that the dis-empowering of women through these shaming mechanisms is an unintended consequence.
Well, your advertising stinks. Really - if you want us lining up to trust YOUR experts and to consume YOUR products and services, your marketing strategies are not working. They're having the opposite effect. .
You put us down. You humiliate us. You make us uncertain, afraid to assert our own autonomy and personal sovereignty. You imply our bodies are not our own, and must be only used in the service of your profits, or for the consumption of men. You don't listen to us. You degrade us. .
Then you wonder why we look around and seek alternatives.
