Thursday spin is a continuation of yesterdays Howard Rumsey post. This is Howard Rumsey’s “Howard Rumsey’s Lighthouse All Stars Vol.6” on Contemporary Records released in 1955. Again another amazing record by this group, with a wonderful cover. I really enjoy the photo, color and type on this cover, its minimal and clean. On this one my favorites are “Mad At The World”, “Sad Sack”, Dickie’s Dream”, and Who’s Sleepy”. The whole record is actually great, as are all of these Lighthouse records. #stuwilliamson on valve trombone, #contecandoli on trumpet, # frankrosolino on trombone, #bobcooper on tenor, #budshank on flute and alto, #claudewilliamson on piano, #stanlevey on drums, and #howardrumsey on bass… #contemporaryrecords #lighthouseseries #records #jazzrecords #vinylrecords #vinylcommunity #jazzvinyl #jazzrecords #vinylrecords #contemporaryjazz #freejazz #improvisation #jazzmusic #bebop

Mid week spin, been seeing quite a bit of Howard Ramsey records lately. I think I will join in, for the fact that they are great. This version is Howard Rumsey’s Lighthouse All Stars “Howard Rumsey’s Lighthouse All Stars Volume 3” released on Contemporary records in 1956. I have acquired quite a few of his records in random record buys or trades over the years, and each and everyone of them is amazing. This group was formed as a house group to perform at The Lighthouse club in Hermosa Beach, teach version of the group had many great players. As a bassist Rumsey did a great job as a leader. On this my favorites are “BigGirl”, “Swing Shift”, “Mabo De Feliz”, and”Snap The Whip”. #herbgeller on alto, #budshank on Bari, #maxroach #shellymanne and #stanlevey on drums, #bobcooper on tenor, claudewilliamson #frankpatchen on piano, #jimmygiuffre on tenor, #frankrosolino and #miltbernhart on trombone, #shortyrogers and #rolfericson on trumpet, #carlosvidal on congas, #jackcostanzo on bongos, and #howardrumsey on bass…. #contemporaryrecords #lighthouseseries #records #jazzrecords #vinylrecords #vinylcommunity #jazzvinyl #jazzrecords #vinylrecords #contemporaryjazz #freejazz #improvisation #jazzmusic #bebop

Oboe/Flute
Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All-Stars

A year ago today I had finished tracking all my parts for the @coldyearsband “Northern Blue” EP with @bobcooperproducer.
.
.
Here is a clip of me playing “What I Lost” which is track three off the EP, which if you follow the link on the Cold Years page you can purchase from us.
.
.
It was an absolute pleasure getting to record with Bob, made me feel very comfortable and his extensive knowledge of all things music is very impressive and he can make my kit sound even more incredible.

The first shot is Bob McTavish in 1969 at Lennox during filming of Greenough’s first and only
surf film ‘The Inner Most Limits Of Pure Fun’ shot in the winter of 1969 and 1970
as George Greenough chased an ‘Endless Winter’ in Australia and California. The scooped out
nose on the deck was to get the weight into the tail to try and enable trimming
and turning from the rear of the board and obviously inspired by Greenough’s
innovations with his ‘spoon’ surfboards see image 3 with McTavish’s interpretations
of the Greenough shape. In image 3, McTavish’s interpretations of the spoon
note the fin has about 300% more surface area than what Greenough was running at the peak
of his performance surfing on similar craft. Image 2 is Bob waxing up in the winter of 1970, the hull bottom
boards creating beautiful lines in the second part of the film. Keen historians will know that
by 1970 most top level and involved surfers at the ‘World Titles’ in Victoria were riding
short boards, in some cases too short for the conditions. Image one and two are frame
grabs from the film collected while working on the transfer from 16mm A&B rolls, to digital
in 2009. Image 3 is taken by Peter Green (American expat who relocated to Northern NSW in
1972 - he was seduced by the then empty perfection as seen in image 4, shot from the water
with a Nikonos 1. Image 5 is Bob McTavish’s quiver in approx 1974, note the asymmetric. When Asymmetry
became a fashion surfboard in, say, 2015? I was intrigued and asked Peter Drouyn where he got
the inspiration from, as Drouyn was noted for riding them well in the 60s….Drouyn said ‘from Midget’…I sent Midget a message (Midget was always forthcoming with history to me) and Midget Farrelly (r.i.p) said ‘I got it from (Bob) Cooper, American expat who came to Australia for the first time in 1963 and turned the aussies on….Talking with Bob Cooper (who is now in his 80s) he said ‘I got the idea from Renny Yater’ in the early 60s. Again, the design ideas of today,
not so new, just interpretations of the past. #bobmctavish #georgegreenough #petergreen #midgetfarrelly #bobcooper #rennyyater #theinnermostlimitsofpurefun
