This is Mr. Dallas Wiens, also known as the first United States recipient of a full face transplant. Wiens was completing a painting job near some electrical wires when he became the victim of a tragic accident and his face caught fire. Wiens immediately became unconscious and woke up from his coma three months later. The fact that he woke up at all and had nearly no brain damage is truly a miracle. Unfortunately, however, he was completely unrecognizable. His face was completely burned off. Burns like these usually result in loss of facial function and features. Sometime later, he was contacted to participate in an experimental face transplant. This surgery typically costs around $300,000. With the success of the surgery, he was told he could expect to move his face and smell again; however, being able to see again was not promised. This is Wiens two years after his surgery and he is most excited about being able to kiss his daughter back. Stories like these truly inspire us at @PlasticSurgery.
