Durga Puja. Today was #navami
and tomorrow is the last day of the mega-festival. The beautifully decorated pandals, the painstakingly made idols, the priests and dhakis from rural Bengal, everyone will go back to where they came from. The decorations will go back with the idol to the nearest water body and the priests, dhakis and relatives will go back home.
While taking the goddess for #visarjan or immersion tomorrow, all the hardworking volunteers will shed a few tears, down a couple of pegs, pull the heavy idol with bare hands and lots of faith and carefully immerse it into a river or lake chanting, #ashchebochorabarhobe or she will come back again next year.
There will be total frenzy at the immersion ghats or promenades, a few will slip and fall into the dirty water, someone or a lifeguard will pull them out with a reprimand, the dhakis will play their drums like men possessed. As idol after idol crashes into the water, the air will be thick with the chanting of, 'bolo bolo Dugga mai ki jai'. The air will be thick with dirt that will be kicked up by a zillion eager feet strutting around and being important.
Women will smear sindoor on the devi and pray to her for long life of their husband and children. They will play with the same red vermilion and feed the idol sweets. There will be the year's last #dhunuchinaach and everyone will try to outdo each other in the last of this year's competitions.
By the time the Sun goes down and the idols are gone to where they came from - ashes to ashes, dust to dust, the teams will come back to their respective pandals, now almost stripped bare, the priests will perform the last ritual, sprinkling of shantir jol or water of peace on everyone present. This is the water collected from the river at the time of immersion. Before going home, everyone will greet everyone by hugging and the young will touch the feet of all the elders and in turn will be invited to the homes of each other for #mishti or sweets and #adda and #bijoyashanmellan
Homes of friends and relatives will be open for the next 15 days till #KaliPuja or #Diwali
