⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ If you’ve never read any PG Wodehouse, it is pretty tricky to explain what to expect. The fact that Stephen Fry @stephenfryactually and Hugh Laurie are quoted on pretty much every book cover saying it’s the funniest thing since sliced clown should give you an idea. If you like the idea of bumbling but loveable toffs engaged in ever-increasing levels of farce, it’s definitely for you.
Psmith (the P is silent - that gives a clue about the slightly barmy, silly yet esoteric style of humour) is our hero here - sending up the antics of the upper classes, while still enjoying being part of them himself. There are a few beauties of comic set piece scenes, including cases of mistaken identity that would make even Shakespeare’s head spin, and a misanthropic Butler wearing lemon yellow pyjamas throwing flowerpots through windows... It’s all probably a bit marmite, but I cannot help but love a writer who can put together comic passages like this: “At the open window of the great library of Blandings Castle, drooping like a wet sock, as was his habit we he had nothing to prop his spine against, the Earl of Emsworth, that amiable and boneheaded peer, stood gazing out over his domain”
