Is your hair ACTUALLY dry? 🤔

I get a lot of questions/comments saying that after a few hours of applying products to wet hair, that their hair feels and looks dry. Is this something that you struggle with⁉️ Because I get this question so much, I’m starting to wonder whether your hair is actually dry, or whether you’re expecting your hair to look juicy and shiny and smooth like how it does when it’s wet, after it has dried. Because that’s not always going to be possible. It’s just not in afro hairs nature to be like that. But that’s okay. 😊

Let me explain in relation to my hair... When my hair is wet with products freshly applied, it feels smooth, looks shiny, it’s flexible and floppy, elongated - moisturised. However, once it dries, the shine decreases a lot, it shrinks, it becomes less floppy, I can no longer run my fingers through it, it gets tangled and is hard to detangle, I lose some definition etc. But does this mean my hair is dry? No! It just means my hair is no longer wet.
You know your hair is actually dry if your hair feels brittle, it breaks very easily, the ends may appear lighter, it doesn’t curl, it doesn’t respond to your favourite hair products well even when they’re first applied etc... If your hair is like this then you will need to take some steps in order to fix it. However, if it’s not, then it may just be a case of getting used to your hair texture and realising that your hair will change a lot from when it’s wet to after it has dried.

Let me know your thoughts. I’d like to get a discussion going on this as it could give me inspiration for more posts that could help you guys out 💖 By @debbiee.corliss

Why did I choose bright pink for my brand's primary colour? Well it was totally by accident (long story) but it was the right accident. According to brand psychology pink represents femininity, positivity, excitement and comfort. Everything I hope to communicate to my readers and clients! How did you come about your brand colours? #LookingforLorraine

The complexity of Lorraine Hansberry's loneliness even while she had dear friends in James Baldwin and Nina Simone, and even while she was famous and invited to highest intelligentsia circles, was among the topics that Dr. Imani Perry discussed in her Schomburg panel this evening. She shared her writing process and her long idea gestation practices.
We got to glimpse her practice in effect: Her writing partner, sounding board, colleague, and longtime friend Dr. Eddie S. Glaude. Very awesome to witness how Perry and Glaude's intellectual exchange models what Lorraine shared w Jimmy Baldwin. 👏🏽
👏🏽
Go, GO, GO! to a LOOKING FOR LORRAINE book event. Dr. Perry depicted Lorraine Hansberry's archive and her life in terms of *abundance*, rather than deprivation. What a paradigm shift in how to approach a writer who died tragically young (age 34)! She filled her talk w similarly brilliant insights and under-discussed topics: her international politics; her radical friendships, e.g. Paul Robeson and older, brink of expat life W.E.B. DuBois.
👏🏽👏🏽
👏🏽 The evening was even more sublime bc I circumvented my own dogged loneliness. I reanimated a 15yr+ friendship, by attending the talk w/ Cheryl Beredo, now Curator of Rare Manuscripts, Archives, snd Images at Schomburg. I swear she looks the same, she says the same of me. We agreed to tell everyone we know Angela Bassett's secret. 😉 💖
A sublime evening. I even asked my first question at a Schomburg Q+A. If you know me from my Ithaca years, then you know I'm lit.
🔥
And I feel more self accepting after I heard Hansberry struggled in school. And that she had a capacious mind, which read and thought expansively all at once.

Finally, I am inspired by Hansberrys eclectic mind and Dr. Perry's writing practices and emulate Perry's writing practice and routine to sit w ideas for weeks or months at a time.

I can't wait to read my book copy! #bookrec #LorraineHansberry #ImaniPerry #inspired #shomburg #JamesBaldwin #blackradicals #archivists #blackarchives #schomburg #blackwomenwriters #readblackwomen #jamesbaldwin #friendship #princeton #cornell Mary Pat B. appreciation thread.
