Cracked black walnuts for the first time today. The kids each got to take turns whacking them with a hammer and trying to find the nuts inside. A good outdoor activity 😉. .
I had gotten a bucket of whole walnuts from a friend's farm a few weeks ago.. I washed them.. cleaned off the hulls.. let them air dry, and then froze them in the shells until today. We cracked about half. I'm saving the rest for next month. Cookies, perhaps?
I wanted to show the kids how to do this at least once. It's a life skill, and you never know when you may absolutely need it. We didn't do too bad for first timers 👌.
I don't grow walnuts here, but I do grow hazelnuts (filberts). When I was trying to figure out how to produce some of our own protein, without animals or large trees, I landed on hazelnuts and peanuts. The peanuts have been super easy. The hazelnuts - too soon to know. I'm hoping they will start producing next year or so.
