Well, the dress is almost complete now.
The skirt took a lot of work today, and I need to rethink how I'm actually going to do it. I'd wanted to avoid elastic but sadly it looks like I'll have to resort to that, in order to make sure it will fit over my hips. But the main waistband (the wider velvet strip) still fits fine and once the binding over the skirt top hem is finished and fitted with elastic, it'll be fine (I hope). I was worried about it looking too bulky but so far it seems okay?
With a petticoat (or several) underneath it'll cease to be a problem. But my God is the whole thing heavy.
I also need to look at how I'm finishing the bodice lining - I'd started sewing in the seams to secure the layers together which is fine, but it would seem the lining layer on the end pieces is a little short, so may look at adding something to extend those just to be on the safe side. They were all cut to allow shrinkage etc but I think I may have underestimated fabric slip. Oh well.
Once the skirt is finished (hopefully this weekend!) and the whole piece assembled, the only things to do will be to fit grommets for lacing and then hem the skirt.
Exciting! - Alex
