Angela Hennessy: BLACK HO(L)ES closing reception, this Saturday, May 19 7-10pm.
Be there! .
Straddling the tension between sight and touch, inner space and outer space, mortality and pleasure, BLACK HO(L)ES is an exhibition of hair works and small scale drawings exploring mythologies of blackness. Using black as a color indicating mourning, erotic potential and the racialized body, BLACK HO(L)ES is a flirtation with notions of visibility, agency, and exploitation within discourses of art, erotica, and pornography. Processes and materials engage in a kind of slippage that arouses the desire to touch, to understand not by logic but by tactile experience from one body to another.
Low-relief drawings on copper sheet are formed by traditional metalsmithing techniques of repousse and chasing, then hand-pierced with needles and backlit by LED lighting. Braids, afro-puffs, and floral adornments address both Victorian and African hair weaving practices.
