For the past year, #BKMConservation has been investigating the materials and techniques used to create our ancient Egyptian panel paintings, focusing specifically on the use of indigo. Examination has included many hours under the microscope with each of these impressive, life-like portraits, and performing multiband imaging and a range of analytical techniques. The culmination of this work will be presented at @thegetty’s Ancient Panel Paintings: Examination, Analysis, and Research (APPEAR) conference in May, at which scientists, conservators, curators and other museum professionals will convene to discuss analysis of their respective ancient Egyptian portrait collections. There’s an aspect of an artifact’s display that is intentionally not obvious, but it involves meticulous engineering and creativity, and it’s vital to making every exhibition possible: mountmaking. In the #BKMConservation lab, mountmaker Mike Mandina works behind the scenes in consultation with conservators and exhibition designers to create custom mounts for Museum collection objects like this Egyptian Royal Ka limestone fragment, currently featured in #SoulfulCreatures.

Another awesome summer with our @bcap_bklyn campers is now the books. Every year these adventurers take part in fun hands-on experiences that weave connections between art, world culture, literature, history, nature, technology, and science. This year we gave them an extra special treat—tours in our #bkmconservation lab! Here a young group of curious minds gets a sneak peek at the ancient animal mummies that will star in our upcoming exhibition #soulfulcreatures, opening September 29.

How do you preserve an inherently fragile object? #BKMConservation recently examined #GlennLigon's screen-print "Untitled (Crowd/The Fire Next Time), which is dusted with coal crystals that are vulnerable to becoming detached. Using a small brush, the stability of each and every coal crystal is gently tested, and if needed, stabilized with an appropriate adhesive. Although this treatment requires a fair amount of time and patience, our paper conservator thoroughly enjoyed the view from the microscope (swipe right)! See this dazzling print on view in Legacy of Lynching, now through Sep 3.

We got to watch the restoration of this painting at the @brooklynmuseum the other day. So cool. #bkmconservation #bierstadt #astormintherockymountains

What can you learn about an artist's process if they are no longer alive? Careful study of artworks and related materials such as preparatory drawings can offer invaluable clues. People who knew the artist can often provide important information or anecdotes. To learn more about #GeorgiaOKeeffe, #bkmconservation recently examined the O'Keeffe works in our collection and researched the lifelong collaborative friendship of the artist and former Brooklyn Museum conservator Caroline Keck. Join us tonight at 6pm to learn more about their special relationship as well as recent technical findings that provide fascinating insights into O'Keeffe's methods and desired aesthetic. Link in bio for tickets.

Passionate about materials and craft, #GeorgiaOKeeffe brought a measured, fastidious approach to everything she did—from creating hand sewn garments to making paintings and works on paper. From the beginning, she had strong feelings about how her artwork should be displayed, handled, and preserved to the best effect. In 1946, she met her match in Caroline Keck, who at the time was a paintings conservator at the @BrooklynMuseum. Keck was every bit as careful and methodical in her approach to conservation as O’Keeffe was to painting. The two women developed a close bond, corresponding over a nearly forty-year period during which Keck served as O’Keeffe’s personal conservator, trusted advisor, and friend. To learn more about this fascinating story, visit the #BrooklynMuseum Friday, July 14 for a #bkmconservation lecture given by Lauren Bradley, Associate Paintings Conservator. Conservation in progress.

During the first week of the public conservation treatment of A Storm in the Rocky Mountains, Mt. Rosalie (1866), paintings conservators made a few discoveries about the #Albert Bierstadt's working practice. The painting was examined closely using infrared reflectography (IRR), a technique commonly used to look for preparatory sketches or compositional changes that are often hidden beneath the top paint layers. Find out what they uncovered at bit.ly/bkmconservation. #bkmconservation
