#birthingrituals no. 11. First week back at work. The crushing BART commute (no more seat for the non-pregnant lady). The awkwardness of office-pumping. The pictures the sitter sends of baby to keep me going through the day. The reunion. Repeat. #workingmomlife

#birthingrituals no. 8: Trying to get things done while baby's sleeping a.k.a Folding laundry a.k.a Crying about all the clothes he's outgrown a.k.a Growing so fast. #nilomars @jaymarcabebe

#birthingrituals no. 9: On "Snapping Back." This is me, 8 weeks post-partum. While I'm still going through tons of physiological change, I've been lucky enough to feel more or less in my body again. Lately I've heard a lot of, "You look good - you don't look like you just had a baby." While these words are definitely offered and received as a compliment, they do give me pause. There should be absolutely nothing wrong with a woman looking like she just had a baby - no matter her size or shape - because new moms are the strongest, most beautiful, most gangster people we'll ever know.
The notion of a mom "snapping back" or going back to who she was pre-pregnancy is simply a myth we should set aside. Giving birth leaves a woman profoundly and forever changed mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and most certainly physically. Mamas, let's unapologetically celebrate that.

#birthingrituals no 3: On Nursing. The first month of raising Mars has been all about nursing. They say this is a critical time to "establish a milk supply" and "nursing relationship," so we hunkered down and nursed - 8-12 times a day - fumbling and fussing along the way. Breastfeeding can be frustrating, exhausting, at times painful and anxiety-inducing. Post-pregnancy, it's been another way of sharing my body with my baby. Though the nursing process has been all-consuming, I'm still taken by the mystery and wonder (okay, and science) of it all. Ultimately, in this first month, what we've established is a deep connection that nourishes us both. #nilomars #breastfeeding #nursing #motherhoodreflections #lineanigra #frecklyareola

#birthingrituals no. 6: Reading. There are so many books out there on pregnancy, labor, and post-partum and not enough time or headspace. These have been some of our faves so far - the ones we've turned to most for inspiration and/or information. Mamas and papas, what's on your list?

Was hired to do some illustrations for a POC Birthworkers Convening in California. Some of the illustrations they asked for included: -an image of different types of "families" or pregnant bodies- LGBT, heterosexual, single, young, old -a pregnant woman being supported by another woman (in whatever way you envision) -an image of a person (maybe a healer or pregnant person) using herbs/traditional medicine, maybe ones like red raspberry, nettle, alfalfa, oat straw (doesn't have to be these but just as idea) -pregnant woman creating ceremony with support system. -a non binary person chest feeding (if you are open to creating this)
