Our trainers have been working on a new behavior with Barnadette the barn owl recently. Here she is demonstrating how the barn owl uses its facial disc to locate sound. Watch how she moves her head to locate the sound before taking off. This was her first day practicing in the amphitheater, so we kept it relatively simple for her with only 3 targets and the sound was at a moderate volume. Targets are chosen at random, sometimes choosing the same one in a row, and we also vary where she begins her flights from. The sound is triggered by remote. Barnadette and her trainers have done a great job with this new behavior!!
