The Northern Waterthrush is one of two types of "waterthrushes" that live in America and both come through New York during migration. Waterthrushes are actually just a type of warbler that frequent wet streams and forest.

Common terns drink sea water and, like most sea birds, have nasal glands that secrete the excess salt. The oldest one captured and re-released was over 25 years old! This was a nesting colony on Governor's Island. .

Northern shovelers were everywhere this past winter. They have flattened "shovel-like" bills with 110 fine projections called lamellae for straining food while they dabble. The oldest known was a 16.5 year-old male.

This red-bellied woodpecker and northern flicker were having an argument in Central Park over a nesting cavity that I believe was in use by the flicker. I was lucky enough to be there to capture the action.

My first opportunity to see loons was this past winter in Central Park. The common loon was a semi-regular visitor, but required patience and timing to photograph. They can dive for fish for up to a minute at a time and then can be hard to find.

The black-throated blue warbler has a very noticeable color pattern and distinctive buzzy song. The males and females use slightly different habitats on their breeding grounds and the oldest known BT Blue was almost 10 years old when killed.

I was lucky enough to be in the park when this Least Bittern was spotted a few weeks back. The last known recorded sighting if one in Central Park was in 1989 prior to that day. Least Bitterns are smaller than their relatives, American Bitterns.

Yellow-rumped warblers are some of the first migratory warblers through Central Park. Once they come, they're impossible to miss and they stay for a long time. Stragglers are still hanging around. You can see their namesake by the large yellow spot on their rump.

This red-bellied woodpecker didn't know what to make of his gray catbird companion. Unfortunately for the Central Park Conservancy, he knew exactly what to make of their log fence.

This Cape May Warbler was the star of the show and he did not disappoint. He came down to get a drink from Tanner Springs in Central Park. Cape Mays only come through during migration and they don't always stop in the park. He'll be gone in a couple days if he's not already.

Palm Warblers were one of the first warblers to come through NYC during migration. They were everywhere for a couple weeks and now there's only a few left. Discernable by their yellow body and red cap.
