We'd like to think co-ops do it right, but the reality is: all grocery stores throw out perfectly good food. And high prices might be covering the cost of such waste.
I found these cookies keeping chipper company in the barista's trash at Boise Coop, while ordering a coffee. (My eyes seek out garbage now.) I told her I couldn't just look at that and not take some, and she laughed and encouraged me to it (what she often did at the end of her shift). They're divine, individually wrapped, and cost a whopping $2 apiece. Guess the baker tosses a bunch every morning. Gross. #binrat #garbagesnack #itneverhurtstoask
