"Night is now falling, so ends this day. The road is now calling, and I must away. O'er hill and under tree, through lands where never light has shone-- by silver streams that run down to the sea..."
~Billy Boyd, 'The Last Goodbye.'
'The Last Goodbye' has meant a lot to me over the past few years. It's the first song I ever performed in front of an audience about a month ago. It was the song I sang at my uncle's funeral with my little brother. I learned it about a week before the Battle of the Five Armies first arrived in theaters, and I sang along with it in the theater as it played, and I cried.
I listen to it over, and over, and over again.
While the LotR nerd inside of me thinks of the films that came out when I was only a few months old, and of young Peregrin singing before Denethor II, I hear a much deeper message within the lyrics.
"And though where the road then takes me, I cannot tell."
I've found myself so hopelessly and desperately lost at times, and listening to Billy (@boydbilly) sing those lyrics, it pulls at my heart. I have to remember that I've come this far, and I'm not yet home. One day I'll make it home.... one day.
As my confidence grows thin, as the darkness threatens to overwhelm me, as the world feels so far away from my hands and my heart, I listen and sing.
"Night is now falling... so ends this day. The road is now calling, and I must away."
For those of you who have never heard it, I urge you to listen to it. It's an incredibly powerful song.
It is on constant replay in my headphones, because it has shaped who I am.
