Donald Land / ドナルドランド
Data East 1988
Donald Land may be the only fast-food licensed Famicom game, but it also stands out as a deceptively clever masterpiece brought to us by none other than Data East. As Ronald McDonald, you'll fight your way across 12 stages on the mean streets of McDonaldLand. There is only one attack at your disposal, but it is a versatile weapon, that also serves as movement tech for this game. By pressing B, Ronald will launch an apple bomb. It can be thrown forwards, upwards, and also planted directly on the ground. He also gains a bit of momentum from throwing a bomb, which is essential to the game's platforming. Even more momentum is gained by landing on your own bomb after it's thrown, boosting your speed significantly. Learn this trick early on, because it comes in handy as early as stage two. These bombs work offensively as well, and they'll latch onto an enemy or boss when thrown. You can only throw one at a time by default, however, you can power yourself up by collecting icons or buying upgrades in the shop, post-level, to throw multiple bombs at once. The stages in this game aren't particularly long, but they'll see Donald exploring all kinds of environments, from cities and villages, a pirate ship, the Hamburglar's castle (?!), and there are numerous situational mechanics, like the balloons Donald uses to soar across the sky in stage four. There is a boss at the end of each level, and many stages allow you to rescue one of Ronald's friends after a boss is defeated. These cutscenes are particularly funny, especially big-ass Grimace making the screen shake when he jumps towards you. Your health bar is fairly standard, allowing you to take a few hits before perishing. Though you'll also lose your power-up when hit, they're common enough that you should rarely be going without it for long. It's tough to find something to complain about in Donald Land - even the swimming mechanics found in the water level aren't too bad once you learn them. This is a well-balanced game that's packed with charm and variety, with a truly unique movement mechanic. I'm loving it.
