When Christians think about heaven, I’m sure most of us would look skyward believing God is somewhere up there beyond the clouds.
We often think of heaven as being a far off place in the sky ... but when Jesus talked about the Kingdom of God or Kingdom of heaven (they are both the same), he often used the Hebrew phrase "malkhut shamayim" which doesn’t just refer to a place, but also to people who follow God and submit to Him. This is why Jesus could say "the Kingdom of God is already among you" because if you are living under the authority of God’s word, then you represent 'malkhut shamayim'—the Kingdom of heaven. We bring about the Kingdom of heaven.
See, God’s kingdom is not just in the sky, it's anywhere that He is recognized as King. So when we submit ourselves to God, we bring His Kingdom to earth. When we serve people in need, when we act justly, or when we walk humbly, we bring God’s Kingdom to earth. As my friend Mallory Boyle says; "It's not about getting people to heaven, but it's about getting heaven to people." We are God’s Kingdom.
The Kingdom of Heaven is not just a place we go to when we die—wherever you are today, God’s Kingdom follows you. •
