the Gendarmenmarkt is one of the most picturesque squares in Berlin? The site is most noticeably marked by the twins cathedrals (French and German) and the Kozerthaus which is a large concert hall. Also prominent is a statue of Germany’s poet Friedrich Schiller. Originally established as a market in the 1600’s the square has a long history. Named for the military regiment Gens d’Armes which was deployed there until the late 1700’s, Gendarmenmarkt is now a favorite of passing tourist. With almost all the buildings being destroyed or heavily damaged during World War II they have now been painstakingly restored to their former glory.
