#BenStories ... We were in hospital for one of April's 3 day chemos in January.
April had been in the playroom with her nana and her daddy when she came flying through her bedroom door on her IV pole... She said "mammy I met Ben! He gave me toys to play with and his daddy gave me a hug!" ... Ben had heard all about April just like April had heard all about Ben.
For the rest of the day I hovered past Ben's room and peeked in every now and then to see was it an OK time to go say hi... I noticed Ben had a trillion teddies on his bed and one in particular stood out to me... A Batman build a bear.
Later that day I went out to get Ben's build a bear a bed, I reckoned his Batman bear needed a bed too, just like Ben did, all super heroes need their rest at the end of the day! I was also looking for an excuse to meet this amazing little guy.
When I returned from the shop I went straight to Ben's room where I met the main man himself, his mam, dad, nana, granda and auntie. It was short and sweet as I welled up with tears because of how gorgeous this family were. I couldn't wrap my head around why another family had to join us on St Johns ward. I cried, Ben's beautiful mammy cried and Ben looked at me, smiled and said thank you. I left the room feeling happy, sad, warm and honoured. Honoured that I got to meet this beautiful, brave little boy.
From that day on I watched Ben, I played with Ben, I prayed for Ben and loved everything about Ben.
I loved Ben's energy, he had so much. I loved his love for Lego, anytime I'd see Ben he was building something, whether it be in the playroom, in his hospital bedroom or even just camped on a bench in the middle of the hospital. I loved Ben's humour, he really told the funniest stories and jokes, sometimes without even trying. I loved Ben's smile, it'd brighten ANYONE'S day.
It is with lots of tears and great sadness that I write my #BenStory 💔
The night before last April put on her Batman pj's, her and her aunties asked me when Ben would be home when April put them on... Ben touched so many hearts and has left so many marks. We will never see anything Batman without thinking of Ben, the world's very own BatBen. 💙❤️
