#restandrestore is a key part of the #gloriouswellness philosophy. We all need time to recharge. A lot of the clients I coach are founders, CEOs and directors who multi-task like crazy and need time to restore their energy, vava voom and brain power. We often get our best ideas when we're in relaxation mode.

Seoul // Been quiet on here this week thanks to a whirlwind trip to Seoul for one of my marketing consultancy clients. It was my first trip to this epic city and this week is best summarised in 5 words:

🐌Sprawling: I hadn't realised how big the city is and how looooong it takes to get anywhere. Walking around Itaewon was a highlight
.
🍽Scrumptious: Korean BBQ was deeeeelish AND I happily tried out every version of kimchi I could get my hands on #fermentedfoods #happyguts
.
❄Seriously Cold: it was -13C without factoring in the bone-chilling wind-chill.
.
🌞Sunny: bright blue skies that light up the skyline of buildings and mountains. It's beautiful place.
.
💤Oh and one other word: jet-lag.
The 9 hour time difference is brutal.

Here's to a weekend of much needed R + R.

Beige // does us absolutely no favours. Beige food tends to be devoid of much nutritional value - think biscuits, pastry, white pasta, white bread.

I used to think I was the epitome of chic wearing 'camel' aka beige until I realised it made me look washed out. Same thing happens when we eat beige. Instead go for colour, crunch, variety and vibrancy in your food 🌱🥑🍎🍆and you'll glow from the inside out. If you're one of those lucky golden skinned people who suit camel, rock it ✌

10 veg + fruit // don't know about you but getting in the [updated] recommended 10 veg + fruit a day isn't always easy unless I consciously load up on veg at each meal. .
I trained with @happyyouhappybody y'day and we were comparing notes on how we get as close as poss to our 10 a day.

What I recommend to my clients is to aim for these proportions:
🌱 fill 1/2 your plate with colourful veg. I went for courgettes and mushrooms cooked in a little coconut oil with turmeric too for added anti-oxidant oomph
🌱 fill around 1/4 of your plate with protein. I had hummus sprinkled with paprika (for no reason other than I love the colour) plus a few sunflower seeds
🌱 then a 1/4 of your plate filled with slow release carbs like sweet potato, quinoa or brown rice - altho I didn't feel the need today so bumped up the colour and gut-loving goodness with some @bottlebrushferments sauerkraut 💜

6 is the number // I'm often banging on about the fact that sugar isn't the benign sweet little treat we're often led to believe. Too much sugar impacts our energy levels, skin (yes, sugar impacts our skin) as well as our waistline.
When I give talks on this topic, one of the things I ask people to do is check food + drink labels.

On the nutritional label, there's a line that says 'carbohydrates, of which sugar'. We want that number to be less than 6g per 100g or 100ml to help avoid sugar spikes.

Next time you're in the supermarket, check a few labels. Especially on 'healthy' things like breakfast cereals, muesli bars and flavoured yogurts. Often there's a shed load more sugar in them than you might think. If there's loads more than 6g per 100g then give it a miss and swap for something with less of the added sweet stuff.

Brain buzz // wow it's been a whirlwind week. I've had a few nights where I've woken at 4am with my brain in 'on' mode.

It happens, right? Especially when we have a lot going on.

Which makes it all the more important to have a good wind-down routine to help switch our body and brain into 'off' mode. And yes that can include watching #Strictly on Saturday night in your PJ's...that's me right now.

3 things I've found help me and my clients are:
.
💤No screens in the bedroom. The blue light they emit interferes with our natural sleep cycle. I switch my phone onto flight mode at 9pm then I'm not tempted to have a sneeky scroll of social media before I go to bed (which turns into a half-hour insta rabbit hole...)
.
💤A warm bath about an hour before bed. With a few drops of lavender oil. The heat, then the cooling of our body helps make us more ready to sleep.
.
💤Camomile tea and a good book to get our brain out of work / thinking / to do mode. And a notebook by the bed in case you wake up with brain buzz at 4am...... 📷 via @unsplash @voros_beni .

2 options // At opposite ends of the spectrum.

When we're go-go-go our body's diverting its energy and resources to fight/flight mode. With jam-packed days and full-on careers this tends to be our default setting. Getting sh*t done. Quickly. Sound familiar?

If we eat when we're in fight/flight mode, we're not giving ourselves chance to digest well or recharge our batteries and brain power for the rest of the day. We're waaaay more productive when we take time out to rest + digest at lunchtime.

I WAS going to post this yesterday, then found myself in meetings from 12-6 and ended up eating 'lunch' at 6pm AND forgot to post this. Yep, this #gloriouswellness thing is a work in progress for all of us. Me included.

Do you eat on the run or at your desk? Give yourself a break and eat somewhere away from your computer and phone. A short break and ideally a blast of fresh air will help power you up.

I'm aiming to put this into practice too today 😉

Space // A common theme that's come up a lot with clients this week is creating space. Those pockets of air that help keep us in balance.

One client is practising writing for a few minutes every morning when he wakes up. Without worrying about WHAT to write, he just writes for a few minutes to clear his head. It's an under-estimated way to create space: allowing ourselves to put whatever comes into our mind on paper without judging it. Just letting it flow.

Do you journal? I'm not fastidious about it but I do keep a notebook by my bed for capturing brainwaves 💭

Brilliant brain power // I often speak about brain power, clarity of thinking and how to get amazing energy.

I'm a big believer in the 80/20 rule and #gloriouswellness is about food that nourishes AND giving yourself flex to enjoy cake, chocolate, wine or whatever floats your boat to balance things out.

I love a glass of champagne and knowing that there will be many opportunities for 🍾 over the festive period, I decided not to drink any alcohol for a month as a way to recalibrate before silly season.

Alcohol impacts sleep, energy and takes the edge off our mental 'sharpness'. It also affects our skin. After 30 days without alcohol, my skin's the clearest and most glowing it's been for ages.

Friday feels // Been food-tasting [hard life] choosing healthy + delicious options for an event I'm running next week. Had to take the opportunity to loiter afterwards on these picturesque steps.

Spiced parsnip + coconut soup // Ah turmeric. How I love your golden immunity-boosting hue. New recipe up on 👉gloriouswellness.com 👈 now for this heart-warming (and ridiculously easy) soup. Link in bio.

Lots of warming spices help to give this soup anti-inflammatory properties. I opt for powdered turmeric for this recipe (easier to get hold of and less likely to stain the entire kitchen yellow…...). Garlic contains quercetin and allicin, both help protect against harmful bacteria.

Parsnips are cheap, plentiful and in season right now. They’re a good source of fibre, as well as anti-oxidant vitamins C and E.

☕Moderation // Yep I know it's tempting to slam into the morning with a give-me-caffeine-NOW head on. May I propose a smidge of moderation? .

Make it about quality not quantity.

One or two coffees a day can be a good thing (if you're not super sensitive to it).
Enjoy the ritual, the smell, the taste, the trip to the coffee-shop if that's your thing. For one of my clients, it's a welcome break away from her office.
Embrace that break.

And in-between drink plenty of water 💧and non-caffeinated drinks.

This one has oats, almonds for protein and vit E as well as sesame seeds 'cos they're a good non-dairy source of calcium. Plus warmth from cinammon and ground ginger. As with all things #gloriouswellness it's sweetened very minimally with just a smidge of honey. Or rice malt syrup would work equally well for my vegan friends.

Bananas + Bluebs // @diningroompr and I had an in-depth conversation about our fave banana bread recipes 🍌. She's hot on cinnamon - like bucket loads of it - whilst I'm up for something a smidge zestier. And it HAS to have minimal added sugar....#gloriouswellness rules.

This one has bananas plus blueberries for extra anti-oxidant oomph. It's #glutenfree #dairyfree and the whole loaf is sweetened with 2 tablespoons of honey. The bananas bring most of the sweetness needed as long as they're nice and ripe. With realllllly ripe bananas this prob wouldn't need any honey at all - will give that a whirl next time.

I'm aware of my own sneaky tendency to over-commit and then I freak myself out by wondering how on earth I'm going to do it all. My bestie rolls her eyes and says "oh, really...?" when I say "I *might* have over-committed myself...."

So I'm practising saying No. Thank You.

It feels liberating. Creates space. It can be around big stuff like work projects. Or smaller day to day things.

One of my clients is practising it saying no to sugar:

No, thank you. I don't fancy anything sweet.

No, thank you.

Minimal + maximal // the last time I bought a jacket from @zara was in 2012. I remember it clearly as the London Olympics🥇were on and I bought it at the new Stratford store. I've worn it to death since then and each time I put it on my arms poke through the ripped lining. I still love it though and I'm not giving up on it yet. I will always be a minimalist at heart.

So 5 years on, @styling_matters helped me to select a few new items including this maximalist number complete with sparkly metallic thread and oversized pearl buttons. And I love it as much as my old one.

Testimonial // A big part of my job is keeping high-flyers accountable for taking their wellness as seriously as their businesses.

One client said he always felt more focused, productive, and a nicer person to be around when he meditated each morning. Yet the meditation went out of the window for months as the work pressure cranked up.

He recently decided to get back on his meditation mat.

We worked on shifting his mindset. Yes those 30 seconds of 'I just want to go back to sleep' will ALWAYS pop up and THE most critical thing is swinging his legs over the side of the bed and getting on with it. He's been practising this for a few weeks and is feeling loads better for having stopped putting it off, silencing the negative self-talk and getting on with something that helps him feel gloriously well. Full moon baby! Did you see the Frost Moon last night / this morning? So called because of the winter frosts kicking in and making it appear super bright in the early morning around 5.30am. I was still in bed then, it being the weekend and all.....

I did put my crystals outside overnight for them to moon bathe and recharge. Cue much eye-rolling from Mr H and him making 'woooo' noises 🙈

I'm not sure of the theory behind crystals (anyone help me here?) but I like them and was happy to let them sit outside in the moonlight.

And I really like sitting outside under the big moon on our garden bench. We need moonlight as much as we need sunlight. Helps to regulate our sleep patterns.

#TBT to catching up with my uni girlfriends a few weeks ago and stealing this snap.

It was one of those weekends of non-stop talking, laughter and loads of good food. We see other so rarely these days and it was a joy to catch up. We first met at Lancaster Uni 25 years ago (!) as bright eyed 18 years olds who drank too much beer 🍺and stayed out all night on Mondays at the local sticky-carpeted nightclub.

I share this for no other reason than it reminded me of how amazing it is to see old friends. Countries, careers, kids, break ups, illness and many other things have got in the way of regular get togethers. But it was totally worth the 24,728 WhatsApp messages to organise this catch up.

And yes your beliefs do become your destiny.

I coach many a high-flyer who's wired on caffeine. And usually sugar too 🙈. Some of them admit to enjoying the buzz. Others know that it's making them tired with the highs and lows.

One guideline we put in place to help scale back on the caffeine roller-coaster AND to help them sleep better is no caffeine after 2pm. So that means no coffee, tea, green tea, energy drinks or colas. Instead, we bring in more H20 and naturally caffeine-free teas like peppermint, rooibos (my fave) or ginger.

Caffeine stays in our system for hours after we've consumed it and can affect our ability to wind down. Keeping caffeine as a morning thing or maybe having your last caffeinated drink straight after lunch can help keep it in check.

Halloween drinks followed by hot choc. I KNOW. I am so rock + roll. I can't help it.

I love @adunaworld super cacao 'cos it's smooth and deeply darkly chocolatey and from a nerdy perspective, the high-flavanol beans can help maintain healthy blood vessels. I mix a heaped teaspoon with a cup of creamy @plenishcleanse cashew milk, one teeny drop of @nicks_uk stevia, then heat it in pan. I froth it madly with my aero whisk gadget and slurp happily.

I'm giving stevia drops a whirl to see if they work in everyday foods where I'd usually use honey. Stevia's made from the leaves of a plant from the basil family. It's naturally VERY sweet and doesn't spike blood sugar. It DOES have a mildly aniseed-y taste though which takes a bit of getting used to. But I'm willing to give it a go if it helps clients (and me!) #hotchocolate #wildhalloween #befreakingglorious

Clocks changing and conkers mean autumn is officially a-happenin'. We spent as much time outside this weekend as possible, including coffee al fresco with @diningroompr @kingdom_pen which has THE most incredible outdoor terrace with views over the Kent countryside. My fave mid week breakfast. It's quick and filling.

I love the chunky texture of organic @flahavans oats.

I mix 1/3 of a cup of oats with 1 cup of @plenishcleanse cashew milk and cook it gently in a saucepan for about 8 minutes until the mixture becomes creamy. If I've planned ahead - sometimes happens, sometimes doesn't - I soak the oats in the cashew milk overnight in the fridge.

Today I'm taking oats I've soaked overnight with me to work. They're in a pot to blitz in the microwave when I get there.

Sprinkle on cinnamon and tuck in. It doesn't need any sugar as the creamy porridge with the naturally sweet cinnamon is a fine thing. And cinnamon helps regulate our blood sugar.

Even Mr H declared it delicious and he's more inclined towards the old skool milk and golden syrup style. So that's praise indeed.

☕I get asked if I drink coffee. Often on the assumption that a/ I don't b/ it's bad.

I do. It's not. In moderation.

One or two cups of coffee a day is ok for most people. Some people are really sensitive to it and are better without it. One of my clients can't touch it, it makes him totally wired and unable to concentrate. In which case, it's au revoir to coffee.

Personally, I have a couple of good quality ones a day and really enjoy them. And I don't have any other caffeine at all for the rest of the day. All part of keeping things balanced.

Best bit of y'day was taking Lilly the office Lab for a walk. She's blind but knows her way to the cafe like a ☕ loving pro. We need more pets in offices. They help us humans to be nicer.

Today I'm at a 2018 planning workshop for an amaaaaazing tech brand. We get to spend the day here. I love my tiny home office and I also love hanging out here not just because someone else make the tea 😉

Saturday feels fabulous when there's a pit-stop @farmgirlcafe @sweatybetty involved. I don't have a sweet tooth* but when Matilde's donuts look this pretty AND have rose petals on top well, why not? .

*am usually not tempted by sweet things put something salty and crunchy in front of me and watch it disappear in seconds 💪. It's one of my special skills.

Welcome package. I love this bit. 🖤

When I start work with a new client, I send them a Glorious Wellness welcome package. It includes a notebook to keep all their wellness-booting notes in from our work together.
.
I also prepare a written summary of the actions we agree in each meeting that I send to them - a big part of my role as health coach is keeping clients accountable to the changes they want to instil. So we need an official record. But they tell me they also like the idea of starting with a blank sheet of paper when they kickstart their wellness. Hence the notebook.

There's also an old-school alarm clock to help wean them off having their phone next to the bed. So many of my clients confess to checking their phones in the middle of the night and wonder why they're having trouble switching off their brain...hmmm. .

I wrapped up the afternoon with a walking / talking session with a client around St James's Park. One of his wellness goals is to get outside more so that's what we did. It's amazing how a blast of air and greenery is such an energy and brain-power booster.

🍾When you're well hydrated, your pee will be a lovely pale colour reminiscent of champagne 😉. If your pee is veering towards chardonnay or god forbid lager shades then Drink. More. Water.

💧A 5% drop in hydration can lead to a 20% drop in performance. Both physically and mentally.
.
A lot of my clients want to decrease (or cut out) alcohol. It tends to be ever-present at work do's, client dinners and as a wind-down.
.
They often ask for a replacement and my go-to alcohol free drinks are:
.
🍅Spicy tomato juice which feels satisfying and decadent.
🍃Soda water with a sploosh of @belvoirfruitfarms elderflower cordial. Mint leaf garnish optional.
🍋@fevertree_uk tonic and loads of ice
💧@purearthlife sparkling kombucha....especially the blue one that has spirulina in it.

Little snack on massive plate. I often get asked for healthy snack ideas and I reckon this combo of sliced apple, a smidge of @pipandnut peanut butter and a few artfully scattered pumkin seeds is the er...nuts.

Crunchy, a teensy bit sweet (naturally) with fibre and good fats to ward off any late afternoon cravings. Sounds weird perhaps. Tastes delicious. Have you tried it?

Beetroot head 😈🌶. I am literally on fire. And totally happy.

Slurping this cool smoothie like my life depends on it.
It's from the energy kitchen @psyclelondon and is called 'no resistance'. I have no resistance to its blend of almond milk, almond butter, banana, himalayan sea salt and maca. A teeny bit sweet, a teeny bit salty. It's lush.

Damn, that class was hard but totallllly worth the beetroot head to get a smoothie afterwards.

Happy client. He's transformed. He was fuelled by caffeine and sugar, stressed and not sleeping, and generally grumpy as hell.

He's worked with me for 6 months and over that time we've changed his habits. He's now eating better, sleeping better and THINKING better.

Like he says, he's now on it.

What a night. Loved listening to the brutally honest and freaking hilarious @megmathewsofficial_ talk about menopause and her crusade to create a sisterhood of women who support each other and TALK about this stuff. Why does no one talk about menopause?! I'm usually a bit of a wallflower about approaching people (famous ones anyway!) but I bloody well made myself go and say hello. Meg's gorgeously approachable, we had a chat about her busting the stigma around menopause. And I secretly swooned a bit over her head-to-toe sequins.

It's one week until @macmillancancer is asking us to go #soberforoctober and get sponsored to go without booze or donate the ££ we might be otherwise be spending on drinks that month.

I'm doing it with a few friends. We all have people in our lives who've been impacted by cancer and this is a health-boosting thing we can do to help a great UK charity.

Staying away from alcohol completely for a while has a bundle of health benefits, one of of which is better quality sleep. We tend to get deeper and more restful sleep when our body isn't being asked to process alcohol. This topic came up in yesterday's workshop and a lot of women I spoke to have experienced the positive impact of less booze on their sleep quality.
