The Federal Pacific Hotel Casino Resort was an air conditioned haven for high and low rollers alike in Mindil Beach, Darwin.
The casino ran under the name pictured here from 1983-1985, giving us the most accurate record yet of what period in time my grandma was travelling in that region.
Australia’s second ever casino was located on Cavenagh St, Darwin, in 1979 at The Don Hotel. In 1983 that lease was transferred to the newly built Mindil Beach Casino but was soon forcibly acquired by the NT Government in 1984 for $50m.
In 2004, after numerous changes of ownership the Skycity Entertainment Group took ownership of the site for $195m.
My grandma was never a high roller but had a famous knack for regular success in small scale gaming and stockmarket nous. We can only hope that she was able to fleece more from the casino than she spent, and at the very least she deprived them of one beer coaster.
Darwin has a population of 145,916 and is the traditional land of the Larrakia people.
