I hopped off the M at Myrtle Avenue yesterday and found myself in front of this powerful mural: Respect Is the Strongest Compliment, by Danielle McDonald and Jazmine Hayes. One of the many things I love about Brooklyn is the vast amount of art I get to see as I go about my daily life, but this mural stopped me in my tracks, keeping me in front of it for long enough to make me late to my meeting. Maybe it’s changed some minds. Maybe it’s empowered someone to stand up for herself. Maybe it’s made someone hesitate before making a woman feel unsafe just for existing. I certainly hope so.
