So today, I wanna talk about a mechanic that will no doubt play a huge difference in competative play and that is directional air dodge. In brawl and sm4sh, you can only airdodge in one place however, in smash ultimate you can input a direction and than begin to dodge an attack in see direction. This mechanic is the reason why wavedashing exist in melee and while it is unclear if it is returning in ultimate, the directional airdodge will offer a ton to competative play. For one, it can easily help you recover by allowing you to dodge towards the stage and get an easier ledgegrab, so characters like cloud, little mac and ike can all benefit from this because of how bad their recovery usually is. It also adds a whole new layer of reads when going for a more juggle oriented games because now you have to predict which way your opponent is going to airdodge and than proceed to punish the high amount of landing lag that they experience after they complete their dodge. This could potentially be great for characters like pit, zero suit samus and rosalina seeing how most of their kit revolves around ladder and juggle combos, so with a right prediction they can easily punish you for big damage. While wavelanding is still in the game, it has around 20 frames of endlag, so I would honestly stray away from using it because your just asking to be punished.
