Today we start the daily Batman: The Animated Series Shots again and we start with the pilot episode "On Leather Wings". While being the pilot it was not actually the first to air, that distinction belongs to "Cat and the Claw" part 1 but by now you guys know this. When you put this episode on, you know you're watching something special. Even if you watch other episodes, nothing quite has the look of this one. Even though the show as a whole has a dark tone and lighting, this one is just a bit darker and more saturated then the rest, which I love! My favorite parts being when the episode slows and we see Batman using his detective skills. When interviewed Bruce Timm said they went with the Man Bat for the villain in the pilot to showcase their series, design, and vision for Batman and if they used a classic rogues there would be too much distraction with people comparing them to previous actors and so on. With no pre-conceived notions on the Man Bat the audience was free to enjoy the mystery of the episode. This is one of the best episodes due to the fact it sets the tone for the most iconic Batman currently in history. We see great art, design, the GCPD at odds with the vigilante, Batman a full on detective figuring out the mystery of the Man Bat, the Batcave and Alfred, it's about as perfect a pilot as you can get. I'm looking forward to the 4th time through the BTAS shots! Have a great Monday my friends!
