“A lady who sets her heart upon a lad in uniform must prepare to change lovers pretty quickly, or her life will be but a sad one. This heart of Lischen's was like many a neighboring town and had been stormed and occupied several times before Barry came to invest it.” Barry Lyndon is the reason why I both love and hate cinema. The film was so perfect, so flawless, and so beautiful. It was an experience I’d most likely never have with another film. In a way this is why it has ruined most of cinema for me. Ever since I watched Barry Lyndon I require other films to have that quality, which hardly any of them ever have. This is and always will be my favorite Stanley Kubrick film. I’m always so surprised when Stanley Kubrick “fans” ignore Barry Lyndon. It is the worst mistake a cinephile can make. It’s so much better than 2001 and Clockwork Orange combined! The film was made in the 70s, yet it looks like a film that was just made this year because of the top-notch quality. In reality, it still looks better and more beautiful than most films within the last two decades. Every single frame by frame is artwork. Pause the film anywhere and it’ll be a great screensaver. So glad that Criterion finally released this on blu-ray and with tons of special features.
